Acid Island in Minecraft is a skyblock variant where your tiny starting island sits in a sea of acid. The water hurts you, rain hurts you, and expanding your island becomes a careful, nervous job instead of a free-for-all. The usual way to play it is a downloadable map (Java or Bedrock) or a server plugin you run yourself: the AcidIsland game mode for the BentoBox plugin.
Search for it and you mostly get download pages and admin docs. So here's the plain version: what it is, how it's different from classic skyblock, the ways to play it, and how to not die in the first hour.
What is Acid Island?
The BentoBox docs put it best: it's skyblock, but the ocean is trying to kill you. You start on a small island surrounded by acid, and if you fall in you take damage. Building over the edge is a gamble. The original plugin's tagline was "Island survival in a sea of acid. With a cow. Harder than skyblock?" That original plugin was first released on Spigot in 2014, as a variation on the same author's ASkyBlock plugin.
You'll see the name written a few ways: AcidIsland (the plugin), Acid Island (the concept), and AcidIslands or Acid Islands (a few maps). Same idea.
How it differs from classic skyblock
In classic skyblock the void is your enemy. Here the void is gone and water is the problem. A few things follow from that, going by the original plugin's feature list:
- Water hurts, and so does rain. The damage is configurable on a server.
- Acid hurts monsters too. That opens up different grinders and traps than you'd build in a normal skyblock.
- No clean stone from acid. Lava meeting acid won't give you clean stone. The plugin author called that by design: the acid melts stone. Cobblestone still works, you just need another kind of generator.
- Boats are the roads. Players can boat between islands to visit each other, and in the original plugin boats are safer than normal: they don't break, and getting out of one doesn't usually dunk you.
- Animals don't care. Passive animals ignore the acid. Monsters and you don't.
On a current BentoBox server there's more. The acid also damages mobs and items, so dropped stuff can dissolve. Acid water bottles poison you when you drink them, but you can purify water by smelting a bottle in a furnace, brewing bottles with coal, smelting a water bucket, or catching drips from a dripstone stalactite into a cauldron. Purified water heals. Which of these are switched on is up to whoever runs the server.
Acid Island Minecraft map: Java and Bedrock
If you just want to try it on your own, a map is the easy way in.
Java: AcidIslands
The AcidIslands map by Szchy, poprostuKrzychu and kolikono is a free download on MinecraftMaps.com. You spawn on a small island with ocean and a border around you, and you push the border out by completing challenges. Water and rain are poisonous, and the page warns contact can kill you. Challenges live in the advancements tab or in a book on your main island. The listing is for Minecraft 1.20.1 and was last updated in December 2023, so match your game version before you open it. To install, put the zip in .minecraft/saves, unzip it, and pick it from the singleplayer list.
Bedrock: Acid Island Classic
On Bedrock, the Marketplace has Acid Island Classic by Dodo Studios, out since May 2020. The official blurb: "Can you survive on Acid Island? Be sure NOT to go for a refreshing dive in the acid, instead explore the world around you!" It promises multiple islands, several biomes to gather from, and multiplayer-friendly survival. It was 310 Minecoins as of November 2026. Prices bounce around, so check the storefront.
Know what you're buying: this is a premade world with multiple islands to explore, not the plugin experience with an expanding island and a challenge list. There are other Marketplace maps with a similar premise too, so compare listings before you spend Minecoins.
Acid Island server: you mostly run it yourself
Acid Island isn't really a "join a big public server" thing. Most people who play it with friends host it. Where it does show up elsewhere, it's usually one game mode among several on a multi-mode server.
The old AcidIsland plugin is dead. Its Spigot page was last updated in August 2018 and only covers Minecraft 1.8 to 1.12, and the page itself sends you to the BentoBox version for 1.13 and up. The one to use now is the Acid Island plugin for BentoBox, which is actively maintained. As of November 2026 its latest release is 2.1.2 (September 2026), built for BentoBox API 3.14.0, Java 21 and Minecraft 1.21.5 through 26.3.
The setup, per the BentoBox docs:
- Install BentoBox and run the server once so it creates its folders.
- Drop the AcidIsland jar into
plugins/BentoBox/addons. - Restart. The addon creates its worlds and a
config.yml. - Stop the server and edit the config. This is where damage, potion effects and the burn delay live.
- Delete the default-created worlds if your edits affect them, then restart.
You can grab the jar from the GitHub releases or a ready-made pack from download.bentobox.world. BentoBox has companion addons for island levels and top-ten lists, challenges, biomes and warps, which is how you get a skyblock-style progression on top of the acid. For the general server side, my guide to making a skyblock server covers the basics, and the acid setup is the same idea with a different game mode.
Newer versions of the addon add some extras: on Minecraft 26.2 and up the sea turns acid-green sulfur water with sulfur vents, and you can throw items into the water near a vent to get transmuted rewards. Those depend on your server version, so don't count on them everywhere.
How to avoid acid damage
You can't wish the acid away, but you can blunt it:
- Armour. In the current addon, a helmet protects against rain and a full set protects against the acid itself. Both are off by default, so ask your server owner or flip them in the config.
- Potions, maybe. The original 2018 plugin told you to use armour or potions, and said a water breathing potion made you immune. The current addon lets the server owner set the acid damage and potion effects, so don't assume a potion saves you on a BentoBox server.
- Stay out of the water. Boat, don't swim.
Your first hour on Acid Island
Here's how I'd play the first hour. It's not a fixed route, just what the rules above point to.
- Get under a roof. Rain burns you if you're caught in the open. A simple roof early saves a lot of hearts.
- Use the starter items, then expand with blocks you place yourself. Stay away from the edge until you've got a plan.
- Build a cobblestone generator, not a stone one. Clean stone melts in acid.
- Make a boat early. It's your road to other islands, and the safest way to cross.
- Keep your animals and go fishing. Animals ignore the acid, and fishing was the original plugin's own tip.
- Do the challenges. They're how the map expands your border and how the plugin hands out useful items, depending on what you play on.
- Don't drink bottled water blind on a BentoBox server. Raw acid water poisons you. Purify it first.
Once you're comfortable, the rest is ordinary skyblock progression. If you're new to the genre, start with my how to play skyblock guide and the skyblock challenges rundown. If you want more maps in the same spirit, there's the best skyblock maps list, and One Block Minecraft is another variant worth a look.
FAQ
Is Acid Island a mod?
Not in the usual sense. The main ways to play it are a server plugin (the AcidIsland game mode for BentoBox) and premade maps.
Is Acid Island harder than skyblock?
The original plugin's tagline asks that exact question. Expanding is riskier because the edge of your island can hurt you, but how hard it is depends on the config.
Is it free?
The Java map is a free download and the BentoBox addon can be downloaded from GitHub. The Bedrock Acid Island Classic map costs Minecoins on the Marketplace.
