How to Play Skyblock: Get the Map, Survive the First Hour, Build a Cobblestone Generator

Every legit way to get a skyblock world in front of you on Java, Bedrock or console, and exactly what to do once you're standing on that tiny island.

Here's how to play skyblock: first you have to get it, because skyblock isn't a mode built into Minecraft. On Java Edition, download the official map for free from skyblock.net/downloads and drop the world folder into your saves folder. On Bedrock (and that includes Switch, PlayStation and Xbox), either buy the official map on the Minecraft Marketplace ($0.99 as of October 2026) or join a skyblock server.

Then load in, stay away from the edge, get your tree replanted and build a cobblestone generator before you do anything clever. There are a few traps on the way: knockoff Marketplace maps, a friend-invite button that's gone from recent Java versions, and one cobblestone generator mistake that ends single-player runs on the spot. Here's each route, then the first hour, step by step.

What is skyblock?

Skyblock is a survival challenge where you spawn on a tiny island floating over the void with almost nothing, and have to survive and build up from there. It started as one map: a player called Noobcrew posted it to the Minecraft Forums around September 4, 2011, pretty much as a joke. It's turned into a whole genre of maps and servers since then, and the history of skyblock covers how that happened.

Skyblock vs Hypixel SkyBlock

Not the same thing. Hypixel SkyBlock is a separate, much more complex RPG-style game that runs on the Hypixel network. It borrows the name and the floating island, but it isn't the Noobcrew map and it doesn't play like it. Lots of "skyblock" answers you'll find online are really about Hypixel's game, so check which one a guide means before you follow it. Here, skyblock means the classic map.

How to download skyblock on Java Edition

The original map is still free, straight from the source. As of October 2026 the official downloads page at skyblock.net lists four versions, and each one has a normal and a Hardcore variant:

VersionWhat you get
V2.1The most played version: a sand island plus a Nether realm
V2.0Harder, with three times fewer block materials than 2.1
V1.1The original version
V1.0Harder, with three times fewer block materials than 1.1

To get it running:

  1. Download the version you want from skyblock.net/downloads.
  2. Put the world folder into your Minecraft saves folder.
  3. Launch Java Edition, open Singleplayer, and load the world.

Start with V2.1. It's the one most people play for a reason, and the harder versions make more sense once you know what you're doing. Skyblock.net says the map stays playable on the latest Minecraft versions, 1.20.4+ and snapshots included. The main downloads are built for the world height changes that came after 1.16.4. If you want to play on an older version, the site keeps those builds separately at skyblock.net/legacy.

You'll find community remakes on sites like CurseForge too. They're fan versions, not the original, so treat them like any other random download.

Can you play skyblock for free? The map costs nothing on Java, but you still need Minecraft itself. If you don't have it yet, see how to play Minecraft for free for the legit options.

How to play skyblock on Bedrock (Switch, PlayStation, Xbox)

This one confuses a lot of people: Switch, PlayStation and Xbox all run Minecraft Bedrock, so the Java download above won't help you. You've got two routes:

Be careful on the Marketplace. Search "skyblock" and you'll get a pile of results, but skyblock.net says it hasn't authorized any other Skyblock-named content for sale there. If you want the original, make sure you're buying skyblock.net's listing and not something that just borrowed the name.

How to get skyblock on a multiplayer server

If you'd rather play on a server than on your own map, skyblock.net runs an official Java server at skyblock.net alongside the Bedrock one. Servers differ a lot, so before you sink hours into an island, run through the five-point checklist in my roundup of the best skyblock servers.

How to play skyblock with friends

On Java there's a catch that older guides miss. As of Java Edition 26.2, you can't invite a friend straight into your singleplayer world anymore. The peer-to-peer invite that showed up in snapshots was pulled from the 26.2 release, and the Minecraft Wiki says it's planned to come back at some point. Until it does, you've got three ways to share a skyblock world:

Mixed groups are trickier. Java and Bedrock are separate games, so a friend on Switch can't join your Java LAN world or Java Realm. You'd need a Java server running Geyser (a crossplay proxy) so Bedrock players can connect, or everyone needs to be on Bedrock playing on a Bedrock server.

Skyblock for beginners: your first hour

1. Respect the edge

There's no ground under your island, just the void. Move carefully near the edges, especially early on when every single block counts.

2. Get the tree replanted before anything else

Your starter tree is your entire wood supply, and saplings are the bottleneck. Oak leaves only have a 5% chance to drop a sapling per leaf block, so if you're unlucky the starter tree can give you zero saplings. Clear every leaf, collect everything that drops, and replant right away. Each new tree gives you more chances at saplings, and that's how you get a tree farm going.

3. Build a cobblestone generator

Cobblestone is how you expand the island, build tools and do basically everything else, so this is the big one. It gets its own section below, because one wrong bucket here wipes out your run.

4. Start expanding

With wood coming in and endless cobblestone, you can finally grow the platform outward.

How to make a cobblestone generator in skyblock

The principle is simple: when flowing lava meets water, you get cobblestone. (One exception: this doesn't work in the Nether, because water evaporates there.) The simplest build, per the Minecraft Wiki's cobblestone farming tutorial as of October 2026:

  1. Dig a trench five blocks long with a one-block gap in the middle.
  2. Pour water at the end nearest the gap.
  3. Pour lava at the far end.
  4. Cobblestone forms where the two meet. Mine it and a new block forms in its place.

The mistake that turns your lava into obsidian

"My lava turned into obsidian" is the classic skyblock beginner complaint, and skyblock.net's own FAQ calls it out. If flowing water reaches the lava source block itself (not just the lava flow), the source turns into obsidian and that generator is done. On a single-player map there's no fix for that, because you only had the one lava, so you have to restart the world. On skyblock.net's own server you can right-click the obsidian with a bucket to turn it back into lava, or use /newisland replace. That's a server command, though, not something vanilla gives you.

So build carefully, and use these two tricks from the wiki:

Upgrades for later

If lava flows into water from above, you get stone instead of cobblestone. Stone mines faster and works with Silk Touch, but that version is fiddlier and usually needs pistons. Pistons can also push fresh cobblestone out of the way so the generator keeps running on its own. Your first one should still be the simple trench.

What to do in skyblock after the first hour

Once the basics are running, skyblock becomes a string of goals you set for yourself. These are the usual milestones, roughly in order:

Once those are done, the island is yours to push wherever you like. If you're on V2.1, there's a whole Nether realm waiting too.

Want skyblock without Minecraft?

Folly is an upcoming standalone game that starts exactly where skyblock does, on one small island in the void, with no Minecraft install needed. It enters early access on October 16, 2026, and it's free, no purchases required. Here's how its island loop works.
