One Block Minecraft, Explained: What It Is, How to Get It, and Whether It's Free

One block in the void, a new one every time you break it — here's how the challenge works, where to get it legitimately, and what the free routes really are.

One Block Minecraft is a skyblock variant where your whole starting island is a single block floating in an empty void. Break it and a new block pops back in the same spot, pulled from a pool tied to the phase you're in, and along the way it throws out chests and the occasional mob too. The best-known Java version is IJAMinecraft's map: a vanilla world save you drop into your saves folder and load like any other singleplayer world.

The quick answers to the questions everyone asks: it needs a paid copy of Minecraft, and the official free trial won't run it on either edition. The original map is Java only; Bedrock players get One Block through separate Marketplace maps made by other creators. And if you want something genuinely free, the closest legit option is a browser game with its own OneBlock mode, like Bloxd.io. Details for all of it below.

What is One Block, and how is it different from classic skyblock?

Classic skyblock hands you a tiny island, a tree and a chest, and the whole game is stretching those few resources into a cobblestone generator and a farm. One Block skips the island entirely. There's nothing to stretch. Everything you'll ever own comes out of that one regenerating block, which means your progress is decided by what it decides to spit out next, not by how cleverly you ration a starter chest.

That randomness is the hook, and it's why YouTube treats One Block as a challenge run rather than just a map. If you want the origin story, sources disagree on even the release year, and the argument's covered in my history of skyblock.

How the phases work (IJAMinecraft's Java map)

IJAMinecraft's version runs through 10 themed phases, roughly 6,500 blocks in total. Each phase lasts around 600–700 blocks, with the early ones shorter:

  1. The Plains
  2. The Underground
  3. Icy Tundra
  4. Ocean
  5. Jungle Dungeon
  6. Red Desert
  7. The Nether
  8. Idyll
  9. Desolate Land
  10. The End

It's not just blocks coming out of the thing:

After phase 10 the map doesn't stop. It flips into what it calls Afterphases: the block keeps regenerating forever, pulling randomly from every phase you've cleared.

One practical tip a lot of One Block guides repeat, and I'd repeat it too: build a safety platform under your block early. One creeper at the wrong moment and you're watching your only block's worth of progress fall into the void with you.

One Block Minecraft download: where to get it legitimately

Here's where people get tripped up. "One Block" isn't one product. Several unrelated maps and mods share the name, and their phase counts and rules don't match, which is why two guides can contradict each other and both be right. The main ones:

VersionPlatformWhat it is
IJAMinecraft's One Block mapJava EditionA vanilla world save. No mods, no mod loader. Get it from IJAMinecraft.com or CurseForge.
One Block mod on ModrinthJava (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge)A separate modded take for 1.20.1 through 26.2. Needs the CodxLib library installed alongside it.
Marketplace One Block mapsBedrock EditionMaps from other creators, each with its own phases. Prices vary, so check the listing.
OneBlock OnlineMinecraft.netMinecraft's own spin, with upgrades, minions, custom monsters and PvP. A different game from the map.

Stick to those official sources. Re-uploads on random file sites and "one block mod" apps aren't worth the risk to your PC or phone, and anything promising the Minecraft map without owning Minecraft is a red flag.

How to make a One Block world in Minecraft (Java)

Because the IJAMinecraft map is a plain world save built on Minecraft's own command system, installing it is just copying a folder. No datapack fiddling, no mod loader, and your texture packs and shaders keep working.

  1. Download the right build. Grab the world archive for your Minecraft version from IJAMinecraft.com or CurseForge. As of October 2026 the current release targets Minecraft 26.2, with older builds going back to 1.13.2.
  2. Extract it. You want a folder with a level.dat file directly inside it. If you've got a folder inside a folder, use the inner one.
  3. Move it into your saves folder. On Windows that's AppData/.minecraft/saves, on macOS Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves, and on Linux .minecraft/saves.
  4. Launch Minecraft and open Singleplayer. The world shows up in your list. Load it and start breaking.

One warning: the creator has said the 26.2 update brings breaking changes, so a world you started on an older version may not carry over cleanly. Finish your run on the version you started it on, or start fresh.

Playing it with friends

The map works in multiplayer, but there's still only one block, and everyone shares it. Progress is communal, not one island each, so groups tend to take turns breaking or split jobs (one mines, one builds, one farms). To run it on your own server, use the world folder as the server's world and make sure the folder name matches level-name in server.properties. Public One Block servers are a whole separate topic.

Can I play One Block on Bedrock?

Not IJAMinecraft's map. The creator has said it doesn't work on Bedrock Edition. On Bedrock and PE your route is the Marketplace, where other creators sell their own One Block maps. They're different maps with different phase lists, so read the description before you buy, and expect the run to feel different from the Java videos you've watched.

How to play One Block Minecraft for free

Short version: you can't play the real map for free, and the official trial won't get you there either.

The full rundown of trial limits by platform is in the Minecraft free trial, explained.

If what you're after is the one-block feeling and not Minecraft specifically, Bloxd.io is the free route I'd point you to. It runs in a browser tab with no download, and it has its own OneBlock mode where you survive on a single block in the sky and grow it out through phases. It's a separate game, so its phases aren't IJAMinecraft's, but the core loop is the same idea. I cover it and a handful of similar games in the best free browser block games.

Otherwise, honestly? If One Block is the thing you want to play, buying Minecraft Java is the real way in.

Like starting from almost nothing?

Folly is an upcoming standalone voxel game, free, where your universe starts as one small island floating in the void and grows outward from there. No Minecraft required. It enters early access on October 16, 2026. Here's how Folly's island works.
