You've got the generator humming and the wheat is growing, and now you're staring at a tiny island wondering what the point is. That's where skyblock challenges come in. Skyblock was never just a survival map. The Minecraft Wiki says you're meant to complete challenges, survive, and learn to make your materials last, and some maps ship with a checklist to push you along. Here's the original list, grouped so it's actually readable, then a pile of newer goals sorted by stage.
Brand new to this? Start with how to play skyblock and come back once you've survived the first hour.
The original skyblock challenges (all 50)
Noobcrew, who posted the first skyblock map on September 4, 2011, put a challenge list with it. The official list on skyblock.net runs to 50 for versions 2.0 and 2.1 and 29 for 1.0 and 1.1. The history of skyblock has the whole story of the map. Here's what the 50 are asking, in my groups:
- Build the infrastructure. A cobblestone generator, a house, a bigger island, an infinite water source, a small lake, a mob-spawning platform 24 blocks out, and a lit Nether portal.
- Grow things. Melon, pumpkin, sugar cane and wheat farms, plus a giant red mushroom.
- Craft and cook the basics. A bed, a furnace, 20 torches, a bow with 64 arrows, 16 glass panes, 5 gold ingots, and 64 stone bricks. Then ten each of cactus green dye, mushroom stew, jack o' lanterns, bookcases, bread and cooked fish.
- Collect. 10 ender pearls, 50 birch logs and 64 bone meal.
- The wool run. Ten wool in each of nine colours: black, gray, light gray, lime, red, yellow, pink, green and orange. It's tedious on purpose.
- The odd ones. Spawn 10 snow golems and craft 20 paintings.
- Bulk crafting. Buttons, signs, ladders, fences, fence gates, levers, trapdoors, pressure plates and cobblestone stairs in tens and twenties, plus 30 stone slabs.
My honest take: the first two groups are the real challenges, and the bulk crafting is a chore you do while something else smelts. If you want to tick them off as you go, skyblock.net has the official list with a tracker on its challenges page.
Which original challenges are awkward in current Minecraft?
Two of them land much later in a run than their spot on the list suggests. Both are doable, just not early.
- Bookcases. Books have needed leather since Java 1.3.1, the year after the map came out. Cows, rabbit hide, fishing junk and piglin bartering all give it, so you're not stuck without cows, but a cow-free route means a mob farm, fishing or a trip to the Nether. Treat it as a mid-game goal.
- 10 ender pearls. Pearls are renewable: endermen drop them, and bartering a gold ingot with a piglin can return two to four. A Warped Forest enderman farm in the Nether is a workable route, though the wiki calls it only mildly efficient. Don't throw them into the void. They vanish.
Starter skyblock challenge ideas
Fresh island, first few hours. These are the goals that set up everything else.
- A cobblestone generator that doesn't eat your lava. The classic first win. My cobblestone generator guide walks through it.
- Infinite water. You need a second source. Bone meal on seagrass in two-high flowing water works on 1.13 and later, and a cauldron plus rain does too. Then dig a 2x2 hole and put sources in opposite corners.
- First crop farms. Wheat, melon, pumpkin, sugar cane. Order and layouts are in my skyblock farms guide.
- A mob platform over the void. Build it 23 or 24 blocks out. Spiders give string, string gives a fishing rod, and a rod gives you fish.
- Collect one of everything you can. Sand, dirt, lava, iron. How to get resources in skyblock covers where each comes from.
Mid-game skyblock challenges
- Cure a zombie villager. It's the only way to get villagers out here: Weakness plus a golden apple. Your iron farm depends on it.
- Build an iron farm. The smallest one in the wiki's skyblock tutorial needs three villagers, three beds and a zombie. My skyblock farms guide has the details for each edition.
- Craft 10 bookcases via fishing, rabbits or cows, as above.
- Finish the wool run in all nine colours.
- Spawn 10 snow golems. It's on the original list, and it's oddly satisfying.
Nether skyblock challenges
- Light a portal from a single lava source. Pointed dripstone from a wandering trader plus a cauldron makes more lava, so one source is all you need to get to the Nether.
- Build a zombified piglin gold farm. A platform in the Nether Wastes about 23 to 24 blocks out, with a slab roof, feeding your bartering. If you'd rather not go hunting, a pig, a lightning rod and a storm also turns pigs into zombified piglins.
- Barter your way to ender pearls. Ten of them, as the original asks.
- Get blaze rods. Nether fortresses can still generate in the void if structures are enabled on your world.
- Summon the Wither. The same fortresses are where the wither skulls come from. It's the hardest goal in this list and I'd call it the end of the road for a run.
House rules that make any of this harder
These are rules you set for yourself, so there's no right version. Pick one and pay for it.
- No trading. Villagers and piglin barters are off the table, so no bartered pearls or leather.
- No chests. Everything you own has to fit in your inventory.
- One chunk. Build only inside a single chunk. Every farm has to fit.
- One life. Hardcore rules. Die and the island's over.
Pair a house rule with the original 50 and you've got a very different map from the one you started on.
Skyblock with the challenges built in
Some skyblock servers run their own challenge systems, and they differ from server to server. Skyblock.net keeps the original list and its tracker, and the best skyblock servers list covers where skyblock is alive right now. Looking for the map itself?
