Short answer on how to get sand in skyblock: the wandering trader. It sells 8 sand for 1 emerald, and it's the only renewable way to get sand in vanilla Minecraft. And no, husks don't drop sand. That one gets repeated on forums, but a husk's drop table is rotten flesh and, rarely, an iron ingot, a carrot or a potato.
That's the pattern for the whole map: the scarce stuff almost always comes down to a trader, a mob drop with awful odds, or one specific block trick. This is the resource-by-resource version, current as of late October 2026 (Java 26.3, Bedrock 26.50). If you haven't started yet, my how to play skyblock guide covers the first hour. This page is for when you've hit the wall.
Skyblock resources at a glance
| Resource | Renewable route | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Sand | Wandering trader, 1 emerald for 8 | Only shows up in some traders' lists |
| Dirt | Coarse dirt, or moss plus an azalea tree | Coarse dirt needs gravel from the Nether |
| Lava | Pointed dripstone over a cauldron | You need a lava source and iron first |
| Iron | Iron golems, or zombie and husk drops | Golems need villagers; mob drops are about 1 in 120 |
| Bone meal | Bones, or a full composter | Doesn't grow sugar cane on Java |
| Obsidian | Flowing water on a lava source | Needs a diamond pickaxe to collect |
How to get sand in Minecraft skyblock
The wandering trader spawns near you in the Overworld. The game makes a spawn attempt once every Minecraft day (20 real minutes), and the chance climbs from 2.5% to 5% to 7.5% over successive attempts. Each trader has nine trades, and sand is an ordinary trade that turns up in about 6% of ordinary slots, so you may get a trader with no sand at all. When you do see it, you get 8 sand per emerald with 8 trades in stock. Red sand is 1 emerald for 4.
The wiki's own advice is that it's more practical to get sand by other means. On a void island there aren't any, so you wait for traders. Here's how to make that less painful:
- Earn emeralds by selling to the trader. Every trader buys a couple of things from you, and the list includes farm stuff like hay bales and baked potatoes, so keep a farm going.
- Don't dawdle. On Java, a trader despawns after about 40 real minutes. Spend your emeralds before it wanders off.
- Bedrock quirk: if you kill a trader while it's showing the sand offer (and you're holding an emerald), there's a 25% chance it drops 8 sand. It's a one-off, though, not a supply line.
- Check your map's starter chest before you do any of this, since what you start with depends on the map.
Desert pyramid chests and endermen carrying sand also give sand, but there are no pyramids on a void island, and an enderman can only carry sand it picked up somewhere.
Do husks drop sand?
No. Husks drop rotten flesh (0 to 2). When a player or tamed wolf kills one, it also has about a 0.83% chance (1 in 120) each of dropping an iron ingot, a carrot or a potato. No sand anywhere in there. And husks spawn naturally on desert surfaces, so a void island isn't husk country anyway. If a custom map says otherwise, that's the map's own rule, not vanilla.
How to get dirt in skyblock
Dirt is renewable, but not by just bone-mealing the grass you've got. With water, lava and moss blocks you can make it forever, and there are three routes in all:
- Coarse dirt. Craft 2 dirt and 2 gravel into 4 coarse dirt, then till it with a hoe to get dirt back. Gravel is renewable through piglin bartering, so this one means a trip to the Nether.
- Moss. An azalea tree growing on a moss block turns the moss below it into rooted dirt. Bone meal spreads moss across nearby stone and dirt. On Bedrock, most saplings convert the moss directly beneath them into dirt.
- The trader. It sells podzol and rooted dirt, but only about 18 podzol or 10 rooted dirt per trader. That's a top-up, not a plan.
The trader also sells moss blocks, which is the easiest way to start the moss route. Till rooted dirt with a hoe and you get dirt plus hanging roots.
How to get lava and water in skyblock
You need one lava source to start with, and where it comes from depends on your map, so look in the starter chest or check the map's rules. After that, pointed dripstone makes it renewable.
The trader sells 2 pointed dripstone for 1 emerald. The build, as the wiki describes it: hang the dripstone from a block, put a lava source above that block, and put a cauldron under the tip. On a random tick there's about a 5.9% chance it fills the empty cauldron with lava. Refilling averages close to a full Minecraft day, but it varies a lot, so be patient. The cauldron is made from iron, so this is also an iron problem. The same setup with a water source above fills the cauldron with water one level at a time, about 17.6% per random tick.
Got lava and water? Together they make stone, which is the whole point of a cobblestone generator.
How to get iron in skyblock
Iron is the hard one. Structure chests have iron, and there are none out here. What's left:
- Iron golems drop 3 to 5 iron ingots every time, plus up to 2 poppies. They spawn when villagers get scared or gossip enough, so you need villagers, beds and workstations.
- Zombies, zombie villagers and husks have a roughly 1 in 120 chance of an iron ingot when a player or tamed wolf kills them. That's about 120 kills on average. Looting III bumps it to about 1.83%, or around 55 kills.
- The wandering trader only sells an enchanted iron pickaxe (6 to 20 emeralds, one in stock). That's a tool, not a supply of ingots.
Building a golem yourself costs 36 ingots, so don't try that. Check your starter chest before you start grinding zombies. If you're tired of scrounging, a map or mode with a gentler start might suit you better: see the best skyblock maps, or one-block Minecraft, which hands you blocks instead of a bare island.
Bone meal, moss and sugar cane
Bone meal is renewable two ways. A bone crafts into 3 bone meal, and a bone block into 9. And when a composter is full, the next use drops one bone meal. Almost any plant-like item works as compost.
What it's good for out here:
- On a moss block, it spreads moss over nearby stone, dirt and cave vines, and can grow azalea and moss carpet. That's your dirt engine.
- On grass, it spawns short grass, tall grass and flowers.
- On saplings, it has a 45% chance per use to advance growth.
- On sugar cane, it grows the cane to full height on Bedrock only. On Java it does nothing.
For sugar cane itself, the trader sells it for 1 emerald each. Plant it on dirt or sand next to water. Bone meal doesn't affect cactus either.
How to get to the Nether in skyblock
You need obsidian, and obsidian forms when flowing water touches a lava source block. Flowing lava on water just gives cobblestone, so make sure it's the source block that gets hit. Since you can farm lava with dripstone and a cauldron, obsidian is renewable too.
- The smallest portal frame is 4 wide by 5 tall. The corners aren't needed, so you need 10 obsidian.
- Only a diamond or netherite pickaxe collects obsidian. Anything lower breaks it and drops nothing.
- You light the portal with fire, usually flint and steel.
Once you're through, piglin barters give obsidian at about 8.5% per gold ingot, and you can mine the portal to recycle its obsidian.
Java vs Bedrock differences
| Thing | Java | Bedrock |
|---|---|---|
| Bone meal on sugar cane | No effect | Grows it to full height |
| Killing the trader for sand | No sand drop | 25% chance for 8 sand if it's showing the offer |
| Moss to dirt | Azalea tree converts moss to rooted dirt | Azalea trees make rooted dirt too, and most saplings turn the moss under them into dirt |
| Trader despawn | About 40 real minutes | 40 or 60 real minutes, or right away once all its trades are used and you're more than 24 blocks away |

Server skyblock works differently
If you came here from Hypixel or another server, a lot of this won't apply. Server skyblock runs its own economy, with shops and kits, so check that server's rules or browse the best skyblock servers.
