If you're trying to figure out how to AFK on Donut SMP, here's the short version: the old AFK area is gone, and you don't need it. Per the independent community DonutSMP wiki (last updated September 2026), every player now earns 1 shard for every 10 minutes of playtime, anywhere on the server. That's 6 shards an hour. You don't have to go anywhere: log in, rack up playtime, and the shards come in.
That's the community wiki's number, not an official announcement, and Donut SMP changes things often. The wiki also says the server decides which time counts as eligible playtime, so check your balance after a stretch online, especially if you're planning to sit idle. A lot of the videos and guides you'll find still tell you to run /afk and park in a lobby for a shard a minute. That's out of date.
What happened to the Donut SMP AFK area
The wiki says the global 1-shard-per-10-minutes rule came in with the "Big June Update" on June 17, 2026. The AFK zone, which used to pay 1 shard a minute, was removed. It went with the Crates update. Two other old shard sources went too:
- The AFK zone: removed.
- Player kills (they used to pay 10 shards): removed.
- Donut+ and Media rank bonuses: the rate is the same for everyone now.
So "how do I get to the AFK area" has a boring answer: you don't. There's nowhere to go.
How to get shards on Donut SMP now
- Join the server. If you need the address, my Donut SMP IP guide has it.
- Rack up playtime. If you're stepping away from the keyboard, park somewhere safe first (more on that below).
- Check your shard balance after a stretch of playtime. The wiki says the server decides which time counts as eligible, so don't assume every minute is counted.
| Playtime | Shards (at 1 per 10 min) |
|---|---|
| 1 hour | 6 |
| 10 hours | 60 |
| 24 hours | 144 |
The other way is to buy shards with real money from the server's official store. That's the only other route the wiki lists now that kills and the AFK zone are gone. If you're after in-game coins rather than shards, that's a different grind. See my Donut SMP money guide.
What shards buy
Shards go into the shard shop. As of September 2026, the community wiki lists these, but the shop changes and items can carry timers, so look at the live listing before you spend:
- Shard Pickaxe, Axe and Shovel: 3,000 each
- Shard Potion of Haste: 6,000
- Max-enchant Netherite gear: Sword 1,500, Mace 2,000, Spear 1,500, armor pieces 1,500 each
- Max-enchant Netherite tools: Pickaxe (silk touch or fortune) 1,000, Shovel 800, Axe 600, Hoe 500
- Bow or Crossbow: 500 each
Do the math before you commit. At 6 shards an hour, a 1,500-shard sword is 250 hours of playtime. I'd pick one item you really want and aim at it instead of drifting.
Is AFK bannable on Donut SMP?
Standing still isn't what the rules go after. The rules do ban macros, scripts, auto-clickers and mouse tweaks, along with movement and inventory mods, radar/ESP/freecam and auto-place. A mod doesn't have to be on a list by name to get you banned if it gives you an unfair edge. Cheating, exploiting bugs and duplication are banned too. Penalties run from suspension to termination, item removal, and punishment that can reach linked accounts.
The practical takeaway is simple. Since shards now come from playtime, there's no reason to run a macro, an auto-clicker or a bot to farm them. Anything that automates your input is the part that puts the account at risk. I'd stay away from the paid AFK bots and clients too. Your account is what's on the line.
One more rule worth knowing: more than five accounts is prohibited, and buying or selling accounts, items or currency outside official channels is banned. The wiki summarizes the server's terms. The official terms in the store are the final word.
Staying safe while you're away from the keyboard
A parked character out in the open is an easy target. If you're going to be idle for a while:
- Don't sit at spawn or next to your base entrance. Pick somewhere nobody has a reason to look.
- Hide the base first. My guide on how to hide your base on Donut SMP covers it.
- Don't leave valuables in your inventory while you're away.

Donut SMP AFK FAQ
Can you AFK on Donut SMP?
Standing still isn't on the rules' banned list, and shards come from playtime rather than a special area. The wiki says the server decides which time counts as eligible, though, so check your balance after an idle stretch before you count on it. There's no AFK zone now, and no command to get to one.
Where did the Donut SMP AFK area go?
It was removed. The community wiki ties it to the Crates update, with the global shard rate arriving in the June 17, 2026 update.
How many shards do you get per hour?
6, at 1 shard per 10 minutes, according to the community wiki (September 2026). The rate is the same for every player.
How do I get shards without AFKing?
You earn them from playtime, and you can also buy them from the official store. Kills no longer pay out shards.
Is there an AFK bot I should use?
No. Macros, scripts and auto-clickers are on the rules' banned list, a bot that plays for you puts the account at the same risk, and the current shard system doesn't need any of them.
