The best Minecraft seeds depend on what you're after, so I've sorted this list by that: seeds for a strong survival start, seeds that put a village near spawn, and seeds that are just gorgeous to look at. Every seed below is a Java Edition seed. Each one is stamped with who listed it, when, and the version it was listed for, because a seed is only as good as the last world-generation update. Coordinates are X, Z.
Latest Java release as of October 2026 is 26.3 (the Wilderness Bound update, out September 15). Java 26.4 is already in snapshots, so treat anything here as a 26.3 pick and check it before you commit a world you care about.

Looking for an island start?
Island spawns are rarer than they used to be, since spawn now prefers big landmasses. I keep those on their own page: Minecraft island seeds. Want even less land than an island? Skyblock is the next step down: here's how to play skyblock, and the best skyblock maps to try it on. If you like that tiny-start feeling in other games, the best Terraria seeds are the same idea.
What a Minecraft seed is, and how to enter one
A world seed is the value Minecraft uses to generate a world. Same seed, same terrain, every time. A number works, and so does text, which Java converts into a number for you. Use the number when you want one specific world.
The number itself means nothing about the world it makes. Typing a biome's name doesn't give you that biome, and a seed like 999 isn't special. Seed 67 got attention in June 2026 because people reported the numbers 6 and 7 showing up as a ravine and a frozen lake near X 100, Z 600 on Java 26.2. Whether it still looks like that on 26.3 is something to check yourself, because the generator changed in between.
On Java Edition
- Click Singleplayer, then Create New World.
- Open the World tab.
- Paste the seed into the seed box and create the world. Keep the minus sign if there is one, and don't add spaces or commas.
Already in a world? Type /seed in chat and it prints the seed in singleplayer, even with cheats off. Leave the box blank for a random world. The Bedrock steps are in the island seeds guide.
Do these seeds work on Bedrock?
Half. Per the Minecraft Wiki, the same number gives you the same terrain and biomes in both editions, but structures, caves, features and mob spawns land in different places. So everything above is a Java list. On Bedrock you'd get the scenery, but the villages and temples I've given coordinates for won't be there. If you're not sure which edition you should be on, here's Java vs Bedrock. Bedrock also has its own official starter seeds: first-time players get a quick world built on one of them, and the wiki lists 11 as of late September 2026.
Why your seed looks different from the screenshot
Usually it's the version. Whenever Mojang changes world generation, usually to add biomes, the same seed stops giving the same terrain. The wiki lists the big breaks: Java 1.7.2, a run of Java 1.18 snapshots, and Bedrock 1.18.0. Chunks you've already generated stay as they were and new ones follow the new rules, so you can end up with a hard seam in your world.
Other common reasons: a missing minus sign, a stray space, or you're on Bedrock and the village is on another edition's map. To look at a seed before you load it, an online seed map like Chunkbase will show you the layout.
Not into seeds? Start on one small island
Folly is a free multiplayer voxel game, coming soon in early access, where every player gets their own small island to start from. Nothing to buy. How it works is in the skyblock-without-Minecraft explainer.
