The Best Minecraft Modpacks in 2026: Which Pack to Play, by Kind of Player

Kitchen-sink, expert tech, RPG, vanilla-plus and Pokémon packs, with loader, version and last update, so you can pick the one that fits how you play.

Ask for the best Minecraft modpacks and you get a Reddit thread of people shouting their favorite, a video list you can't scan, or a ranking with no versions on it. What you actually want is the pack that matches how you like to play, plus whether it's still updated and what it runs on. So I've grouped these by kind of player, with the stats read off each pack's own FTB, Modrinth or project page as of October 16, 2026. For All the Mods 10, RLCraft and DawnCraft, you get CurseForge's own description, quoted.

What's the most popular Minecraft modpack?

CurseForge's blog ranked its top 25 by community downloads on November 30, 2025, and the top of that list reads: RLCraft, the Pixelmon Modpack, Better MC (BMC4), SkyFactory 4, All the Mods 9, then All the Mods 10. DawnCraft is seventh and Prominence 2 eighth. The blog doesn't print the download numbers, and it's nearly a year old, so treat it as CurseForge's ranking, not mine. If you're after the "better Minecraft" packs people search for, that's the Better MC line, which the blog describes as a large vanilla-plus pack with over 320 mods, 100+ quests and the Aether dimension.

FTB shows install counts, Modrinth shows downloads, and Modrinth only gives relative update times, so don't compare the two kinds of number head to head. Also, version numbers look odd now: Modrinth and FTB list Minecraft versions like 26.1.2 and 26.3 next to the old 1.21.x numbers. Most of the big packs still sit on 1.21.1, so if you searched "best Minecraft modpacks 1.21," that's most of this table.

Best kitchen-sink modpacks

Kitchen sink means hundreds of mods across tech, magic and exploration, with a quest book pointing you at the next thing.

All the Mods 10

CurseForge's blog calls it a "sprawling, curated kitchen-sink pack with ~500 mods, robust FTB questing, and a proper endgame," on NeoForge 1.21/1.21.1. Check its CurseForge page for the current file before you install.

FTB Evolution 2

The new one. Released October 8, 2026, and already on v1.3.2 as of October 16. Its page promises "kitchen-sink freedom with custom progression, rebuilt mods, thousands of quests, and a massive endgame," and it throws in a multiplayer submarine, a space section and skill trees. It needs Java 25, at least 6 GB of RAM and recommends 8. It's a week old, so it's had no time to settle, and I wouldn't call it stable yet.

FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.21

This is my pick if you've never played a modpack before. The page describes it as kitchen-sink-style and "perfect for modded Minecraft fans of all skill levels," it's tied to Direwolf20's YouTube series, and it has the lightest RAM ask of the three FTB packs: 4 GB minimum, 6 recommended, Java 21. Version 1.21 added Ender IO, Railcraft Reborn, Steve's Carts and Minecolonies.

Best expert and progression modpacks

GregTech: New Horizons

GT:NH calls itself "a hardcore, content rich and meticulously crafted technical modpack," and it's still on Minecraft 1.7.10, so it plays like a different era. 3,900+ quests, 300+ mods, and you start "with a stick and a rock." Its site says it's "not for those who want instant gratification" and that the community expects you to do your research before asking for help. Its site also lists a team record for the world's-fastest Stargate run: 22 days, 16 hours and 45 minutes, which tells you the scale. The official route is the Prism ZIP, and it publishes server ZIPs too. If you want your tech with a long runway and you don't mind a wiki open on the second monitor, this is the one.

FTB StoneBlock 4

You start encased in stone and pick one of five starting islands. From there it's six Foundation chapters, handcrafted vaults and a villager-powered Unearther, with Create, Mekanism, Ars Nouveau, Draconic Evolution and Twilight Forest in the mix. Over 2.1 million installs. It's skyblock-adjacent, so if the void-island start is what you're after, see my list of the best skyblock modpacks.

Best adventure and RPG modpacks

Prominence II: Hasturian Era

Modrinth describes it as a "lore-rich RPG modpack built on custom content": a talent tree, an artifact weapon you forge and upgrade, two story campaigns, a capital city full of NPCs and Mythic boss challenges after Chapter II. It's on Fabric 1.20.1 and runs on both client and server. The page discloses a sponsored server list, hosting affiliates, Patreon perks, cosmetics through Essential and opt-in Essential telemetry, and it warns that only the sites it lists are official, since other hosts "might contain malicious content."

DawnCraft

CurseForge's blog calls it a "Souls-like RPG adventure pack with a custom questline, reputation system, and dozens of animated bosses, powered by 200+ curated mods."

DawnCraft or Prominence 2?

Both sit in CurseForge's top ten, so popularity won't settle it. Pick by the kind of RPG you want. Prominence 2 is the one with a lore-heavy campaign structure, a talent-tree class system and a capital to return to. DawnCraft leans Souls-like, with boss fights and a reputation system. Want a story to follow? Prominence 2. Want to learn boss patterns the hard way? DawnCraft.

RLCraft

Number one on CurseForge's ranking, filed under Hardcore Survival on Forge. The blog's own description: an "intense, deeply rewarding survival experience. With dragons, thirst, temperature systems, and powerful mobs." That's the whole pitch: survival, but meaner.

Best lightweight and vanilla-plus modpacks

Fabulously Optimized

This one adds no content. It's a Fabric performance pack: "beautiful graphics, speedy performance and familiar features in a simple package," with shaders, connected textures and zoom covered, and it's one of the first packs to move to new Minecraft versions. It's client-side and "does not include content mods, so you can play on any world or server." It has 18.7M downloads on Modrinth. If your framerate is the problem, start here.

Vanilla Perfected

Modrinth calls it "a compilation of Vanilla Plus mods & packs to perfect the Minecraft experience without drifting too far from the feel of the base game." It's on Fabric, lists versions from 1.20.1 up to 26.3, and its author says it's driven by what he uses in his videos and "has never intended to be anything more than that." That honesty is why I like it. Good if you want vanilla with a few upgrades on a current version.

Best Pokémon modpacks

Two routes. The Pixelmon Modpack is a pre-built Pixelmon setup (the mod, its soundtrack, JourneyMap, Oh The Biomes You'll Go and the compasses) on Forge or NeoForge, and it's number two on CurseForge's ranking. Cobblemon has an official Fabric modpack (800+ Pokémon, Showdown-engine battles, riding), though its page says Cobblemon does not have an official server. COBBLEVERSE builds on Cobblemon 1.7.3 with all 1025 Pokémon and gyms for four regions. For servers, see my pages on Pixelmon servers and modded Minecraft servers.

Best Minecraft modpacks to play with friends

The three FTB packs and GT:NH all publish server files, and Prominence II, the Cobblemon packs, Vanilla Perfected and the Pixelmon Modpack list client and server support on Modrinth. StoneBlock 4's page also says you can start an instant "FTB Worlds" server from the in-game Multiplayer tab, with one catch: server owners need enable-command-block turned on in server.properties, or some structures break. For anything bigger, my guide to making a modded Minecraft server covers the setup. Fabulously Optimized is the exception: it's client-side, so it works on any server that allows vanilla clients.

Do Bedrock players get modpacks?

No. Bedrock has add-ons, not modpacks. CurseForge puts it this way: Java uses mods, Bedrock uses add-ons, and add-ons are more restricted. The trade-off is that they work cross-play across PC, mobile and consoles. Everything above is Java Edition, and my Java vs Bedrock comparison has the rest of the story.

How to install a modpack

It depends on the pack. FTB packs install through the FTB App, GT:NH recommends its Prism ZIP, and the Modrinth packs install through the Modrinth App. CurseForge's app picks the right loader for you. Give the pack the RAM it asks for before you blame it for crashing, since the CurseForge blog suggests 8 GB minimum and 12–16 GB for shaders or big packs, and back up your world before you update. My rundown of the best Minecraft launchers compares the options.
