Most lists of modded Minecraft servers hand you an IP and stop there. You paste it into regular Minecraft and get kicked straight back to the menu. Here's the part they skip: you can't join a modded server with a vanilla client. You need the exact modpack the server runs, at the version it names, on the same mod loader. Get that right and joining is as easy as any other server. Get it wrong and nothing connects.
So every entry below names the pack, its version, the loader and the address. All six were online when I checked them on October 12, 2026. They're all Java only, and every one of them runs Minecraft 1.21.1. A player count is one moment on one day, not a promise.
How to join a modded Minecraft server
Plugin servers do all their tricks on the server side, so you join them with the game exactly as it comes. Mod servers add new blocks, creatures and machines, and your game needs those too. That's why the server list will happily show a modded server and then refuse to let you in. If you want the full story on that split, my Paper vs Fabric breakdown covers it from the server owner's side.
The easy way in is a launcher app. The two the servers themselves send you to are the Modrinth App and the CurseForge app. Cobblemon.gg's own instructions sum it up: get one of the launchers, search for the server's modpack, click install, and the launcher handles the mod dependencies for you. Then you add the server IP and join.
- Install the Modrinth App or the CurseForge app.
- Search for the modpack using the exact name in the table below.
- Make sure the pack version matches the one the server lists, then install it.
- Launch the pack, go to Multiplayer, add the server address and connect.
I'd start with Modrinth. The app is free and open source, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Every server on this page lists its required pack on its Modrinth page, so you're never guessing which pack is the right one.
Modded Minecraft servers at a glance
| Server | Modpack (version) | Loader | Address | Online when checked (Oct 12, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complex Cobblemon | Complex Cobblemon (v1.7.3b) | Fabric | modrinth.mc-complex.com | 1,433 |
| Cobblemon.gg | Cobblemon.gg - Ultimate Pokemon Experience (v3.8) | Fabric | cobblemon.gg | 383 |
| Cobblemon Delta | Cobblemon Delta (v4.3.1) | Fabric | play.cobblemondelta.com | 228 |
| CobbleGalaxy | CobbleGalaxy - Cobblemon (v2.3.0) | Fabric | rinth.cobblegalaxy.com or hub.cobblegalaxy.com | 226 |
| Aero SMP | Aero SMP (v4.2) | NeoForge | play.aerosmp.com | 26 |
| Project Crowbar SMP | Project Crowbar SMP (build 260907) | NeoForge | play.projectcrowbar.com | 4 (Discord link needed to join) |
See the pattern? Four of the six are Cobblemon servers, which add Pokémon-style creatures to Minecraft. Right now Cobblemon packs own the easy-to-join end of public modded Minecraft. They're big, open, and a one-click install away. If machines and contraptions are more your thing, the two Create servers at the bottom are smaller and quieter, and they're a different kind of fun.
Big Cobblemon networks vs small modded SMPs
The servers on this list split into two camps, and you'll want to know which one you're after before you pick. On one side there's the big network with a modded wing, like Complex Cobblemon. You get lots of people online and a whole network behind the server. On the other side there's the small single-pack SMP, like Aero SMP or Project Crowbar. That's a few dozen people online at most when I checked, one shared world, and a pack built around one idea. Neither is better. One feels like a theme park and the other feels like a friend's server you've been invited onto.
Complex Cobblemon: the biggest modded server on the list
Complex had 1,433 players online when I checked, more than the other five put together. The Complex Gaming network says it's been running for over a decade, so this isn't a server that appeared last month. You join with the Complex Cobblemon pack (v1.7.3b, Fabric, Minecraft 1.21.1) at modrinth.mc-complex.com.
One nice touch: Complex says players on the official COBBLEVERSE modpack can join and play alongside people on its own pack. If you've already got COBBLEVERSE installed, check Complex's page before you download a second pack.
Good: the busiest public modded server here, a network with a long track record, and a clear install path.
Not so good: Complex asks you to give the pack 3 to 5 GB of RAM (4 GB is its sweet spot), so an older laptop may struggle. It's a big crowd, too, so if you want a server where everybody knows your name, look further down. Checked October 2026.
Cobblemon.gg: the easiest to get into
Cobblemon.gg makes joining about as painless as modded Minecraft gets. Its own site walks you through it: install the Modrinth or CurseForge launcher, search for the Cobblemon.gg pack, click install, add cobblemon.gg and you're in. The pack is "Cobblemon.gg - Ultimate Pokemon Experience" v3.8 on Fabric, and the site says up front that you need Minecraft Java Edition.
It had 383 online when I looked, with 8,342 recent plays showing on Modrinth. It runs gyms, raids, dungeons, breeding and battling, and the site says all of that gameplay is free. There's a store with cosmetic ranks at store.cobblemon.gg, and the site says that's cosmetics only.
Good: a simple install, a busy server, and a clear line between what's free and what's for sale.
Not so good: it's all-in on Pokémon-style play. If catching creatures isn't your thing, nothing here will change your mind. Checked October 2026.
Cobblemon Delta: a solid mid-sized Cobblemon server
Cobblemon Delta sits in the middle of the pack, with 228 online and 1,260 recent plays when I checked. You need the Cobblemon Delta modpack at v4.3.1 (Fabric, Minecraft 1.21.1), and you connect at play.cobblemondelta.com.
Good: plenty of people online when I checked, without the sheer size of Complex.
Not so good: it's one of four Cobblemon servers on this page. If you've played one of the others, the core game will feel familiar. Checked October 2026.
CobbleGalaxy: two addresses, one server
CobbleGalaxy runs the "CobbleGalaxy - Cobblemon" pack at v2.3.0, on Fabric for Minecraft 1.21.1. It had 226 online and 1,711 recent plays when I checked.
The one quirk is the address. Its Modrinth page lists rinth.cobblegalaxy.com, while the minecraftservers.org listing shows hub.cobblegalaxy.com. Both were listed as live on the same day. Try whichever one connects, and if neither works, grab the current address from CobbleGalaxy's Discord.
Good: a well-populated Cobblemon server with its pack on Modrinth.
Not so good: the address shuffle is annoying the first time you join. Checked October 2026.
Aero SMP: just Create, done properly
Aero SMP describes its pack as "just Create and Create Aeronautics", and I love that. No 300-mod kitchen sink. You get gears, contraptions and things that fly, in a shared survival world. The pack is Aero SMP v4.2 on NeoForge (Minecraft 1.21.1), and the address is play.aerosmp.com.
It's small, with 26 online when I checked. But Modrinth showed 4,403 recent plays, so plenty of people drop in.
Good: a tight, single-focus pack, so you know exactly what you're getting, plus a real SMP feel.
Not so good: don't expect a crowd at any hour. Checked October 2026.
Project Crowbar SMP: a modded SMP for tinkerers
Project Crowbar is the tech-and-magic pick. Its NeoForge pack (build 260907, Minecraft 1.21.1) bundles Create with the Aeronautics addon, Ars Nouveau, Immersive Engineering, CC:Tweaked for in-game computers, and Open Parties and Claims to protect your base. It's been self-hosted since September 2025.
There's a gate, though. You have to link your Discord account before you can join play.projectcrowbar.com, so join their Discord first or the server will just turn you away. There's also a donate link.
Good: the deepest pack here if you like building machines and automating everything, with claims to protect your base.
Not so good: it's tiny. There were 4 people online when I checked, though it had 1,179 recent plays. And the Discord step adds friction. Checked October 2026.
Modded servers on Bedrock?
Short answer: not really. Forge, Fabric and NeoForge are Java Edition things, and Bedrock can't run them. On Bedrock, "modded" means add-ons and Marketplace content, which is a different thing from a modpack.
Some networks let Bedrock players onto Java servers through a crossplay bridge called Geyser. Minehut does this at bedrock.minehut.com on port 19132. But Minehut is upfront that mod content like Cobblemon or blocks from tech and magic mods won't render on Bedrock. To play modded properly, you need Java Edition. Any list promising you "modded Bedrock servers" is selling you add-ons or a bridge that won't show the mods.
If you're on Bedrock or console and just want a good server, my guide to Minecraft servers to join covers the best picks for your edition and how to get on from Xbox, PlayStation or Switch.
Before you join a modded server
- Pack version match. This is the big one. The modpack name, its version and the loader all have to match what the server lists. If the server updates its pack, update yours before you try to connect.
- RAM for the pack on your PC. Complex Cobblemon, for one, asks you to give its pack 3 to 5 GB, with 4 GB as the sweet spot. Other packs will want different amounts, so check what your pack's server recommends before you blame the server for lag.
- Discord-gated whitelists. Some smaller modded servers want you in their Discord, or your account linked, before you can join. Project Crowbar works this way. If a server won't let you in, check its Discord.
- Java account. Every server here needs Minecraft Java Edition. Steer clear of anything advertising itself as cracked.
Want your own modded server instead?
If you'd rather play a pack with a handful of friends than with a few hundred strangers, run it yourself. My guide on how to make a modded Minecraft server covers getting a modpack running on a server your friends can join. And if you don't want to pay for hosting, my comparison of free Minecraft server hosting lays out the free routes and what each one costs you in RAM caps and sleep timers.
So which modded server should you join?
Want the biggest crowd and the longest track record? Complex Cobblemon. Want to be catching creatures ten minutes from now with no fuss? Cobblemon.gg. Want a busy Cobblemon world that isn't the giant? Cobblemon Delta or CobbleGalaxy. Want gears and flying machines on a small, friendly SMP? Aero SMP. Want a proper tech-and-magic pack and don't mind the Discord step? Project Crowbar. Whichever you pick, install the exact pack version first. That one step is the difference between playing tonight and staring at a disconnect screen.
