Is Terraria cross-platform? Not in any official, click-a-button way. As of October 2026 (the latest PC build is 1.4.5.8), PC players can play with PC players, and iOS and Android players can play with each other. Console crossplay hasn't shipped. The crossplay update, 1.4.6 "Crossplay Phase One", has been announced but isn't out yet.
There's one loophole. PC and mobile can join the same game if you connect by IP address to a PC host or a dedicated server. It's not a menu feature and it can be fiddly, but it works. Here's the full picture for a friend group split across devices.
Terraria crossplay: who can play with who
| Pairing | Play together? | How |
|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam or GOG) ↔ PC | Yes | Steam friends, join via IP, or a dedicated server |
| iOS ↔ Android | Yes | Official mobile multiplayer |
| PC ↔ mobile | Only by IP | Mobile joins a PC host or dedicated server by IP and port. Same game version on both |
| Console ↔ PC or mobile | No | Waiting on 1.4.6 |
| PlayStation ↔ Xbox ↔ Switch | No | Different console brands don't mix |
That's the official wiki's line: players on different platforms can't play multiplayer together, apart from Android and iOS. The wiki also calls PC-to-mobile via dedicated servers "likely unintentional". Re-Logic's mobile and console porting partner, DR Studios, describes it differently: crossplay between PC, dedicated servers and mobile has worked for years, ever since mobile version 1.3.0.7 in 2019, provided everyone's on the same release. Both are true in practice. It works, but it's not a supported menu option.
Is Terraria 1.4.5 crossplay yet?
No. 1.4.5 ("Bigger and Boulder") came out January 27, 2026 on every platform, and it didn't add console crossplay. Crossplay is slated for 1.4.6. In Re-Logic's September 24, 2026 update, the team said the finishing touches were going on Crossplay Phase One and the submission should be ready "in the near future". There's no date. Treat anyone quoting one as guessing.
Can PS5 and PC crossplay in Terraria?
Not today. PlayStation, Xbox and Switch players can't join PC or mobile games, and the console builds have no way to type in an IP yet. So if a video or forum post promises you a console-to-PC workaround, I wouldn't count on it. Until Phase One lands on console, there's no IP box to type into.
What Phase One and Phase Two actually mean
DR Studios laid this out in its February 2026 State of the Game post.
- Phase One: type a host's IP address and port into any client to join their session. It also brings the mobile-style Local (LAN) and Remote lists to console. That's the setup PC and mobile already have, extended to consoles. On a home network, mobile LAN crossplay is easy. Over the internet, DR calls it "temperamental and complex to set up reliably".
- Phase Two: built-in join codes, so you can share a session ID with anyone on any platform and any network. Re-Logic says it wants to get it in "as soon as possible" after Phase One, with no date.
Cross-saves and cross-progression aren't part of either phase. DR says only that it hopes to get to them "in good time".
Will Terraria become cross-platform?
Re-Logic has said so, and the statements are getting firmer. In 2023 the team called crossplay "in the works" and "not guaranteed". In its 15th anniversary post in mid-May 2026, Re-Logic said crossplay is "on deck soon" and that updates would continue beyond 1.4.6. By August, 1.4.6 was officially the Crossplay Phase One update. As of late September 2026, 1.4.6 still isn't out, and Re-Logic hasn't put a date on it.
How to play Terraria multiplayer today
Pick the route that matches your group. These all work in 1.4.5.8.
Host and play
Start Terraria like normal and choose Host & Play. The world saves to and runs from your device, so it shuts down when you leave. Friends join from the multiplayer menu. On console, split-screen co-op counts as multiplayer too.
Steam friends
On PC, if you and your friends are on Steam, you can join through Steam. The host has to be friends with the joiner. Hosts don't accept random Steam players, and a 1.4.5.7 fix made the game tell the failed joiner why.
Join via IP
From the multiplayer menu, pick Join via IP and enter the host's IP address and port. This also works for any dedicated server. Windows installs include TerrariaServer.exe, and there's third-party server software too.
Mobile
Go to Multiplayer, pick your character, then choose Local or Online. Local finds LAN games on your Wi-Fi, with up to 8 players. Hosting a LAN world needs at least 1 GB of RAM. Online lets you add a server by IP and port, or rejoin one you've used before.
PC and mobile together
Run the world on a PC host or dedicated server, make sure the PC and phones are all on the same game version, and have the mobile players add it under Online by IP and port. On the same home network, it's painless. Over the internet, expect to wrestle with it.
Console online play
Console friends show up in the Friends section of the join screen. For online play on PlayStation you need PlayStation Plus, and on Switch you need Nintendo Switch Online. Xbox needs a console online subscription too.
Which route for your group
- Everyone on PC: Steam friends. Easiest.
- Everyone on mobile: Local if you're in the same room, Online by IP if you're not.
- PC plus phones: a PC host or dedicated server, joined by IP.
- Anyone on console: everyone on the same console brand, for now. Or have the whole group move to PC.
Once you're in, you'll want somewhere to go. My best Terraria seeds are a good first world, and the Terraria skyblock seed guide covers the island challenge.
