Is MultiMC safe? Yes, as long as you get it from multimc.org. It's a long-running launcher with its code public on GitHub, and the scary-looking stuff you'll find in search results is a log4j notice, a user question and an antivirus complaint, not a story about the launcher being compromised. Technic and GDLauncher are in the same boat: fine from their own sites, with a couple of quirks worth knowing. The bigger risk with all three is whatever mods you load into them.
Checked in October 2026. If you're still picking a launcher, start with my roundup of the best Minecraft launchers. I also did the closest sibling of this page: is Prism Launcher safe.

Is MultiMC safe?
MultiMC's source lives at github.com/MultiMC/Launcher under the Apache 2.0 license, with over a hundred contributors and fresh commits in late October 2026. Downloads (Windows, macOS, Linux) come from multimc.org, served off files.multimc.org.
"It's open source, so it's safe" has a catch
You'll see that line on Reddit a lot. MultiMC's site says the public code is there for collaboration, and the binary you download differs by including the branding and the API keys the launcher needs to work, plus packaging changes. Open source tells you the code can be read. It doesn't mean the file you downloaded is that code, which is why the download source matters so much. Forks and lookalikes aren't MultiMC.
The log4j notice
In December 2021 multimc.org posted "IMPORTANT MESSAGE - Security vulnerability in Minecraft." That was about log4j (CVE-2021-44228), a bug in Minecraft itself that could let attackers run code if you played on or connected to a server with an unpatched game. The post says single player should be safe, and that MultiMC forced patched log4j versions so that if you hadn't done anything unusual with it, you should be fine. So a launcher pushing a fix for a Minecraft-wide bug, not a flaw in the launcher.
The "critical security issue" on GitHub
Issue #4323 on the MultiMC repo has that scary title. Read the body and it's a user asking whether MultiMC would get the fix for "a critical security issue affecting everything with Minecraft" automatically, the same log4j problem. It was opened and closed on December 10, 2021. It's a question, not a vulnerability report.
Antivirus flags
Issue #4678, from May 2022, is titled "Kaspersky is saying that MultiMC is a trojan." The user reporting it wrote that they were sure it was a false positive, and it was closed the same day. Separately, a user reported Malwarebytes quarantining MultiMC in a 2021 Malwarebytes forum thread. Antivirus tools do flag Minecraft launchers now and then. If yours does, grab a fresh copy from multimc.org rather than restoring a file from somewhere else.
Is it still maintained, and what about my Microsoft login?
The GitHub releases page still shows 0.6.14 from December 2021, which makes it look abandoned. It isn't. A 2023 post explains MultiMC dropped stable releases and now uses the develop channel only, which is why the site's downloads are named "mmc-develop." Sign-in goes through Microsoft's login: add your Microsoft account inside MultiMC, and migrate any old Mojang account at minecraft.net first.
Is Technic Launcher safe?
Technic's download page is technicpack.net/download. On Windows there's an installer that bundles the Java runtime Technic needs; Linux and Mac get a .jar. The launcher is open source (GPL-3.0, github.com/TechnicPack/LauncherV3) and was updated as of October 2026.
The launcher isn't where I'd focus. Technic is built around packs hosted on the Technic Platform, where creators publish them, and that's the part to be careful with: a pack is a pile of other people's code. Stick to packs with lots of players and a history. technicpack.net itself carries ads and trackers, but that's the website, not the launcher.
Is GDLauncher safe?
GDLauncher's official site is gdlauncher.com, run by GorillaDevs Inc. Two things to know before downloading.
- There are two versions. The old GDLauncher has been rewritten and officially discontinued; the current one is GDLauncher Carbon. The site still links an old build, so I'd take the current download.
- It's source-available, not open source. The code is under the Business Source License 1.1, and the name and logo are trademarks.
It's also free with no premium tier, and it installs from both CurseForge and Modrinth. One more trust point: its repository shows it integrates Overwolf for ads. If ads in a launcher bother you, read its privacy statement before you install.
The safe-download checklist
- Type the address yourself: multimc.org, technicpack.net/download or gdlauncher.com. Not a link from a video description or Discord DM. MultiMC itself says it can't vouch for anything from sources other than multimc.org.
- Don't confuse "modded launcher" with "cracked launcher." They're different things. If a launcher promises Minecraft without an account, that's the world I covered in is TLauncher safe.
- Sign in only from a copy you got from the official site, and keep two-step verification on your Microsoft account.
- If antivirus complains, redownload from the official site and rescan before restoring anything.
- Keep it updated and avoid old forks.
The bigger risk: what you load into it
All three launchers install mods and modpacks, and mods are programs. They run on your PC with your user permissions, so a bad one can do real damage whichever launcher loaded it. That's the risk worth your attention. Read whether CurseForge is safe for how a major mod site handles it, and pick packs from the best Minecraft modpacks rather than random uploads.
Honestly?
MultiMC from multimc.org is fine, and so are Technic and the current GDLauncher from their own sites. Pick on features, not fear. And spend the paranoia on your mod list.
