Is Lunar Client safe? The real one, downloaded from lunarclient.com, is a legitimate mod launcher from a named company, and you still need your own paid Java Edition account to use it. The risks are elsewhere: fake Lunar downloads and gift scams, an ad-heavy privacy policy, and switching on a mod that the server you're joining bans. Is Lunar Client a virus? I haven't seen a reputable report of Lunar or Badlion spreading malware, but that's an absence of bad news, not an independent audit.
The same goes for the other PvP clients people ask about. Badlion turns out to be run by the same company as Lunar, and Feather isn't really Feather anymore. Everything below is as of October 2026, so check the sites if something has moved.
Who makes Lunar Client and Badlion
Both are made by Moonsworth, LLC. The footers of lunarclient.com and badlion.net say so, and one Moonsworth privacy policy covers both. Lunar describes itself as a modpack for the popular Minecraft versions (1.7, 1.8, 1.12 and 1.16 through 1.21) and says it's free to use. The money comes from cosmetics and a paid Lunar+ subscription. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and its footer says it isn't affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft.
Here's the part that surprises people: since September 2025, Badlion Client launches only through the Lunar Client launcher. Badlion's blog says its own launcher can no longer be downloaded, and both sites hand you the same download. So "Lunar or Badlion?" is really one launcher, one company and one privacy policy. Windows users are opted in to Badlion automatically; on macOS and Linux you switch on "Use Badlion Services" in the launcher settings.
Do you need to log in with Microsoft?
You need to own Minecraft: Java Edition. Lunar's FAQ says to make sure you bought it from minecraft.net. To log in with a Microsoft account, it needs to be an adult account (18+) that owns the game, or you connect to an adult's Microsoft family plan. So no, it's not a way around paying for Minecraft. If you're after that, my cracked Minecraft explainer covers why that road goes badly.
Lunar's own safety guide says it will never ask for your Minecraft email or password. If something calling itself Lunar asks for either one, close it.
Will Lunar Client get you banned on Hypixel?
Not for the client itself. Hypixel's Allowed Modifications page lists clients and mod packs, naming Badlion Client and Lunar Client, as fine as long as every mod included is allowed on its own. Cheat clients are against the rules. You're the one who has to check each feature and make sure the banned ones are fully off. Hypixel can force-disable some, but it says that's on you, and that all mod use is "at your own risk".
Hypixel's rule of thumb: FPS boosters, cosmetic tweaks and basic HUD info are okay; anything that automates gameplay or changes how your client talks to the server isn't. Anything that doesn't clearly fit a permitted category is treated as banned. That's Hypixel only. Check any other server's rules before you join. If you're hunting for somewhere to play, I've got lists of Minecraft PvP servers and servers like Hypixel.
What Lunar Client does with your data
This is the bit I'd actually worry about. Moonsworth's privacy policy (updated September 22, 2025) says it collects identifiers like your IP address, Minecraft UUID, email, device identifiers and coarse location, and uses Google Analytics. It also says that since August 13, 2024, your IP address, a hashed-email ID, zip code, activity data and inferred profile are shared with, and in some cases "sold" to, third-party advertisers, including data brokers.
- Where the ads show up: the policy says targeted ads appear only in the Lunar launcher.
- Opting out: there's a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" page linked in the site footer.
- Server info: your Minecraft UUID goes to Microsoft, Hypixel and PcketHost so you can use Minecraft servers.
- Some mods call out: turning on certain features, like MCTiers, can send your IP to third-party services.
- Retention: data can be kept up to five years, longer if there's a business or legal reason.
For parents: the policy says the services aren't meant for under-13s (16 in some places) and that Moonsworth doesn't knowingly sell or share personal information of under-18s for targeted advertising. I'd still sort out the opt-out with your kid, and see is Minecraft safe for kids and Minecraft parental controls for the wider setup.
Fake Lunar downloads and gift scams
The scam is the likeliest way to lose an account. Lunar's safety guide (October 2024) says scammers run fake Lunar sites and fake store links to steal Minecraft accounts. The usual play is a "cosmetic gift" link that asks for your Microsoft email and then the verification code, which they use to reset your password. Lunar says it has no cosmetic gifting system and never asks for a verification code.
- Only download from
lunarclient.com/download. Lunar's other official addresses are store.lunarclient.com, support.lunarclient.com, moonsworth.com and lunarclient.dev. - Be suspicious of links with words like gifts, claims, promo or gifting in them. Lunar says official domains don't use them.
- Lunar says it has only three official Discord servers, and the real bot never DMs you links or invites. It only messages you if you were punished, got an XP tip or won a giveaway.
- If you gave a code away, go straight to Microsoft's account recovery.
Hypixel gives the same advice for any mod: get it from the official source, since unofficial downloads can hide bugs, extra features or malware. The same logic is why I wrote up TLauncher, and why I like Prism Launcher as a cleaner alternative. There's a full rundown in the best Minecraft launchers, and OptiFine users can read is OptiFine safe.
Is Feather Client safe? It's Dawn now
Feather's site now says it was acquired by InPvP and everyone is being moved to Dawn, with every download button pointing at dawn.gg. GamesBeat reported the acquisition on May 21, 2026, as a sale of the in-game technology and user base, with an update installing a launcher called Dawn. Dawn's own post says accounts, cosmetics, mods and settings carry over, and that migration started June 25.
One more thing you'll run into: in April 2026 a YouTuber alleged that Feather's launcher kept loading ads in the background, even when minimised, inflating ad numbers. GamesBeat reported this as an allegation, and I wouldn't treat it as proven. What it does tell you is that it's a new owner and a rewritten launcher, so read Dawn's privacy page before you sign in.
The quick safety checklist
| Client | Who runs it | Price | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lunar Client | Moonsworth | Free, paid cosmetics and Lunar+ | Ad opt-out, official download only |
| Badlion Client | Moonsworth, runs through Lunar's launcher | Free, paid cosmetics | Same privacy policy as Lunar |
| Feather (now Dawn) | InPvP | Check dawn.gg | New owner, read Dawn's privacy page |
- Download only from the official site, never from a link in a DM or video description.
- Never hand over a verification code or password to anyone.
- On Lunar or Badlion, opt out of ad sharing through the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" page in Lunar's site footer.
- Check the server's mod rules before joining, and turn off any mod you're unsure about.
