Is LabyMod Safe? What It Is, Where to Download It, and What to Check

The real client is a legitimate, free Java mod pack. The risks are fake downloads, old versions, trading and server rules.

Is LabyMod safe? The real one, downloaded from laby.net, is a legitimate client made by a German company, LabyMedia GmbH, and it's free to use. LabyMod has been renamed Laby Client (the version numbers are gone), but it's the same client from the same team, and most people still search for it as LabyMod. The trouble doesn't come from the client itself. It comes from fake download sites, old versions, in-game trading and breaking a server's mod rules.

Below: what it is, where to get it, what the privacy policy actually says, whether servers like Hypixel care, and a checklist you can use on any Minecraft client. Everything here is as of October 2026. If you're comparing options, I've also covered whether Lunar Client is safe and whether Essential is safe.

What LabyMod (Laby Client) actually is

It's a Minecraft client for Java Edition only, with its own launcher. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and covers 20+ Minecraft versions from 1.8.9 up to the latest. LabyMedia says it bundles 190+ mods and has 5M+ users, which are its own numbers. It can also run Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt instances, and import from other launchers. No Bedrock version, and no official Android or iOS client (there's a companion phone app for cosmetics and daily rewards).

It isn't a cracked client either. You need a genuine Minecraft Java account from Microsoft to log in, and LabyMedia says you can't play without owning the game. The site footer is upfront that it's not an official Minecraft service and isn't approved by Mojang or Microsoft. If cracked launchers are what you were really searching for, read what cracked Minecraft actually gets you first.

Where to download it (and where not to)

LabyMedia's own support page says to download the launcher only from laby.net. That's the rule that matters most. Download sites that host old copies of LabyMod turn up in search results. Skip them. Hypixel's own mod guidance says the same thing in general terms: get mods from the official source, because unofficial downloads can carry malicious code like viruses or spyware.

On Windows, check the publisher in the SmartScreen dialog. It should read LabyMedia GmbH. If it says anything else, cancel and download again.

Is LabyMod a virus? About those antivirus warnings

LabyMedia's support page describes a false alarm after the launcher was signed with a new certificate: Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", and Avast, AVG and Norton may quarantine Update.exe as IDP.Generic. LabyMedia says VirusTotal showed 0 of 69 engines flagging it and that it filed false-positive reports. Its advice is to add a targeted exception, not switch your antivirus off. That notice is undated, so it may be old news by the time you read this. If your antivirus complains about a file that didn't come from laby.net, that's a different story. Delete it.

LabyMedia also says it never asks for your Microsoft password, a Microsoft verification code or your Microsoft account email. Anyone asking for those, whether on Discord or in a "partner" message, isn't them.

Your account and your data

The launcher logs you in with your Microsoft account. Parents, note this one: LabyMedia's support page says login can fail for Microsoft accounts under 18 that aren't in a family plan, and suggests an adult account or a Microsoft family plan.

Separately there's a laby.net account. You register by logging in through Minecraft in the client. You can turn on two-factor authentication, and deleting the account is self-service in the security settings (an email code, your 2FA if enabled, then a 7-day wait before it's gone for good). You can export your data too.

As for the privacy policy: the controller is LabyMedia GmbH in Walldorf, Germany, and the policy is mostly about the website and apps. It lists server logs (browser, OS, pages visited, IP address), the IP address and time stored at registration, cookies, Google Analytics with IP anonymisation, Cloudflare, PayPal and Sofortüberweisung for payments, and Firebase in the mobile apps. Linking a Google/YouTube or Epic Games account is optional, and the Epic name only shows on your public profile if you switch that on. The policy says there's no automated decision-making or profiling. It doesn't spell out what the game client itself sends while you play.

Is LabyMod free?

Yes. LabyMedia says the client and launcher cost nothing, with every mod, the voice chat, the server list and the launcher included. The money comes from optional shop items: cosmetics (cloaks, bandanas, hats, wings, pets, emotes) and Laby+, a one-time premium membership with no subscription or auto-renewal. You don't need either. Prices change, so check the shop.

If a kid is installing it, the shop is where I'd pay attention:

Is laby.net safe?

laby.net is LabyMedia's own site, not a separate third party. It calls itself a Minecraft profile platform: skins, capes, a server list, name lookups and a blog. Browsing skins doesn't mean installing anything. One thing worth knowing: Mojang removed public name history, and laby.net keeps its own stored history, so your old usernames can be searched there. After logging in you can hide or delete names and skins.

Will LabyMod get you banned on Hypixel?

Hypixel doesn't mention LabyMod by name. Its allowed-modifications page says every mod is used at your own risk and that it can't review every version of every mod. Clients such as Badlion and Lunar are allowed as long as each mod inside is allowed on its own, and you're responsible for what you switch on.

Allowed categories are performance, cosmetic, simple HUD elements like armor and status, and brightness. Anything not clearly in a category is out by default. Minimaps, automation like auto-click or macros, and anything that changes how the client talks to the server are not allowed. LabyMedia says its client has no cheats and is built to be allowed on servers. Fair enough, but it also ships add-ons like a minimap and waypoints, and a Toggle Sneak mod, which sit close to Hypixel's lines. Check every module you enable against the server's rules. More on the server itself in is Hypixel safe?

How to check any Minecraft client or mod

  1. One official source. Go to the maker's own site, not a mirror, a video description or a Discord link someone sent you.
  2. Check the publisher in the Windows dialog. It should match the company that makes the thing.
  3. Scan the file on VirusTotal if you're unsure. One odd hit on a known file can be a false alarm. A pile of hits on a file from a random site isn't.
  4. Stay current. LabyMedia says LabyMod 2 and 3 are no longer supported. Old versions are the ones to avoid.
  5. Read what each mod does against the server's rules before you join.
  6. Never hand over Microsoft codes or passwords, and don't trade accounts or items with strangers.
  7. Use a unique password and 2FA on your Microsoft account.

My verdict

Get it from laby.net, check the publisher, keep it updated, skip the trading, and leave anything questionable switched off on servers with strict rules. Do that and LabyMod is a normal, legitimate client. Don't, and no client is safe.
