Hytale vs Minecraft: What's Actually Different, and Which One to Play in 2026

One is a finished sandbox you can play on almost anything. The other is a $19.99 early-access PC game with big ideas and a few Under Construction signs still up.

Here's the short answer to Hytale vs Minecraft. Hytale is a paid, PC-only voxel game in early access, made by the people who founded the Hypixel Minecraft server network. It adds an adventure layer, combat its makers call "responsive" and new creator tools to a block world, and a few features are still stamped "Under Construction." Minecraft is the finished, cross-platform sandbox, out in full since November 2011, with a huge mod scene and endless servers. Want something new and don't mind rough edges? Try Hytale. Want the complete thing, or do your friends play on consoles or phones? Minecraft still wins.

What Hytale actually is in 2026

Hytale went into early access on January 13, 2026, and its own game page is upfront about it: "This is a slice of our vision for Hytale." The studio is Hypixel Studios. Riot Games owned it and cancelled the project, then in November 2025 the original founders, the team behind the Hypixel server network, bought it back.

You buy it from store.hytale.com and play through the Hytale Launcher. It isn't on Steam. My guide to whether Hytale is free has the full price, edition and platform breakdown.

What Minecraft is in 2026

Minecraft 1.0 came out on November 18, 2011. On PC it's now one purchase with Java and Bedrock in the box. Java is the modding and community-server edition. Bedrock is the one on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, phones and Chromebooks, with cross-play across all of them. It's finished, and that's the biggest difference between the two before you look at a single feature.

World and gameplay: Exploration Mode vs open survival

Hytale's early access is built around Exploration Mode: procedurally generated zones with dungeons, creatures and random events, plus building and farming.

The story side, Adventure Mode, isn't finished. Hytale's July 16, 2026 dev blog gave a first look at "Chapter 1" and said, "we've deliberately held new content back." So the campaign is a plan, not something you're buying today.

Minecraft is open survival. You spawn, you punch a tree, and what happens next is up to you.

Combat and progression

Hytale leans hard on combat, and "responsive combat" is right there in its pitch. Ask people who've played it and you'll hear about weapon movesets, stamina and charge attacks, though that's player talk, and weekly patches keep moving things around. What Hytale's Update 5 patch notes do spell out: spears can block, and shortbows and crossbows have "signature abilities."

Minecraft's fighting has more to it than its reputation. On Java, every swing runs on an attack-cooldown meter, so spam-clicking does less damage. Swords are fast and get a sweep attack that clips everything nearby. Axes hit harder, recover slower and can knock out a raised shield. Bows need a charge-up draw, crossbows are slow to load unless you enchant Quick Charge, tridents work in melee or thrown, and shields soak melee hits and most arrows. Bedrock has no attack cooldown at all.

Minecraft's progression is a ladder you climb at your own pace. There are seven tiers: wood, gold, stone, copper, iron, diamond and netherite. You enchant gear with XP and lapis lazuli, and netherite isn't crafted from scratch: you upgrade diamond gear at a smithing table. The arc runs through the Nether to the End, and killing the ender dragon is the game's one built-in ending.

Hytale has its own named materials. Its Update 5 patch notes mention iron and adamantite loadouts, plus copper, cobalt and thorium ingots. The guided story structure is where it's most obviously early, because that's the part still being built.

Building and creative tools

Both games are about building, but Hytale wants to hand creators more of the toolbox. Its Creative Mode lets you, in Hytale's words, "fly around and explore, create, edit, make things explode." It also "works hand-in-hand with Blockbench," so you can build and animate models there and bring them into the game. In-game scripting and some cinematic and creative tools are still marked "Under Construction" on hytale.com as of October 2026, so treat those as plans.

Minecraft's base game has its own Creative mode: infinite blocks from the Creative inventory, double-tap jump to fly, you basically can't get hurt, and mobs leave you alone. On top of that come community mods on Java, and add-ons, skins and texture packs from the Marketplace on Bedrock.

Modding: a new Mod Browser vs years of Java mods

Hytale's Update 6 (August 27, 2026) added an in-game Mod Browser. Hytale also says its server code "will be shared-source and available for everyone," but that's a plan, not something you can grab today.

Minecraft's modding scene is the one everybody else gets measured against: community mods on Java, and Marketplace add-ons and Marketplace Pass on Bedrock.

Multiplayer and servers

Hytale's game page says it plainly: "From day one, Hytale is built around player-run servers." Official servers "may come later." Update 5 (May 26, 2026) added Server Discovery, an in-game list of community servers you can search and filter by tag, so you're not hunting through Discord posts.

Minecraft's server scene is enormous. Java has "countless online servers," in Minecraft's own words, Bedrock has official featured servers, and both let you host your own or join someone else's. If you want somewhere to play tonight, I keep a list of Minecraft servers worth joining. If you'd rather run one for friends, here's how to make a Minecraft server.

Platforms: PC only vs basically everything

As of October 10, 2026, Hytale's store lists system requirements for Windows 10 and 11, Linux and Apple Silicon Macs. It launched on Windows only, and there's no Xbox, PlayStation or Switch version. Minecraft runs on Windows, macOS and Linux (Java), plus Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile and Chromebook (Bedrock). Bedrock players on all of those can play together, while Java only plays with Java. If your group is spread across devices, that probably settles it.

Price: both are one-time purchases

Neither one is free. On PC, Minecraft is $29.99 for Standard, $39.99 for Deluxe and $49.99 for Ultimate on minecraft.net, and it's in Game Pass too. My breakdown of what Minecraft costs on every platform covers the rest. Hytale's Standard edition is $19.99, and the pricier editions add cosmetics, not more game. Prices change, so check the storefront before you buy.

Early access vs a finished game

This is the gap that matters most. Minecraft is complete. Hytale ships updates every week, which is great if you like watching a game grow and annoying if you want things to stay put. Back in January, IGN's review described it as "a rotunda of literal Under Construction signs."

Hytale vs Minecraft for kids

Hytale's own game page lists "Smart Parental Controls" as under construction as of October 2026. In both games, who your child plays with depends on the server they join. Minecraft is finished and has a much longer track record, so it's the safer bet for a younger player right now. I'd look at Hytale again once those controls ship.

Hytale vs Minecraft player count

There's no fair comparison to make. Neither game has an official figure you can line up against the other's. Any "Hytale vs Minecraft player count" chart you see is guessing about at least one of them.

Hytale vs Minecraft FAQ

Is Hytale a copy of Minecraft?

No, though you can see why people ask. Both are voxel games, and Hytale's founders ran the Hypixel server network in Minecraft before that. But Hytale puts its weight on combat, generated dungeons, a story mode in progress and creator tools like Blockbench integration. Shared heritage, not a reskin.

Is Hytale Minecraft 2?

No. IGN's review called it "basically Minecraft 2," but that's a vibe, not a fact. Hypixel Studios is independent and has nothing to do with Mojang.

Is Hytale better than Minecraft?

For combat, exploration and fresh creator tools on PC, Hytale is the more interesting game right now. For a complete game, cross-play and the biggest mod and server scene around, Minecraft is still better.

Is Hytale free?

No. Standard is $19.99 and there's no free version or trial. Details in my Hytale price guide.

Honestly?

Pick Hytale if… pick Minecraft if…

If you're a Minecraft player itching for something new and you play on PC, try Hytale. Its combat, generated dungeons and creator tools are a real change of pace for $19.99. Just go in knowing it's early access, and the story mode isn't there yet.

If your friends are on consoles or phones, or you want a finished game, stick with Minecraft. Hytale can't follow you off PC, and nothing touches Minecraft's mods and servers.

If you're a parent being asked for one, I'd go Minecraft for now and wait for Hytale's parental controls to ship.

And if you mostly want a free voxel world to build in with friends, keep an eye on Folly. It's an upcoming PC voxel game, free, no purchases required, entering early access on October 16, 2026. It isn't playable yet, but here's how its island-and-portal setup works.
