Is Hytale Free? Price, Where to Buy It, Platforms and Multiplayer (2026)

What it costs, where you can actually buy it, what it runs on, and why there's no such thing as a legit free Hytale download.

Is Hytale free? No. Hytale is a paid early-access game, and the cheapest way in is the $19.99 Standard edition from Hytale's own store. There's no free version, no free trial and no free tier. It's PC only too. As of October 10, 2026, the system requirements on store.hytale.com list Windows, Linux and Apple Silicon Macs, and there's nothing for Xbox, PlayStation or Switch.

If you spent years thinking of Hytale as the free Minecraft killer, I get the "wait, I have to pay?" reaction. Here's the good part: $19.99 gets you the whole game, and the pricier editions only add cosmetics. And yes, it's multiplayer. The whole thing is built around servers that players run themselves.

How much is Hytale?

Hytale's store has three editions:

All three get you the full game plus cosmetics. The only difference between them is which cosmetic tier you get. None of the higher tiers unlocks features the Standard edition doesn't have. So my take is simple: buy Standard. Supporter and Cursebreaker make sense if you want to back the studio and like the cosmetics, but you won't get any more game for the extra money.

Those are US dollar prices from the store on October 10, 2026. Prices can change, so check the store before you pay. Hytale's homepage puts it bluntly: "Hytale Is Available Now! Purchase now for immediate access." If you're weighing it against Minecraft, I've laid out what Minecraft costs on every platform too.

Where to get Hytale (and is Hytale on Steam?)

You buy Hytale from one place: store.hytale.com. The Purchase button on hytale.com sends you there. Gift codes get redeemed through your Hytale account at accounts.hytale.com, but a gift code is still a bought copy. Someone else just paid for it.

Hytale isn't on Steam, and the store doesn't mention Steam at all. Hypixel has said why. It wants early access to stay closer to its own community. It didn't want a wave of snap first impressions pushing the game's direction around too early. And it says Steam doesn't currently support some of Hytale's modding features. Hypixel has also said this doesn't mean Hytale will never come to Steam. It just doesn't see the need right now.

So if you were searching Steam for it, stop. The official store is the only place Hytale sells it.

Where can you play Hytale? PC, Mac, Linux, and the console question

Hytale is a PC game. The store's system requirements list:

If you read back in January that Hytale was Windows-only, that's out of date. It launched on Windows, but Linux and Apple Silicon Macs are on the requirements list now. Intel Macs aren't on it, though.

Is Hytale on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch?

No. There's no Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch version, and Hytale hasn't said if or when one is coming. The store's own early-access note also says the game is missing controller support for now, so even on PC you're playing with a mouse and keyboard.

Is Hytale multiplayer?

Yes, and multiplayer is the whole point. Hytale's game page says "From day one, Hytale is built around player-run servers." The idea is that you host your own world and customize it with mods and plugins. Hytale says its server code will be shared-source and open to everyone. Official servers "may come later," but for now the multiplayer scene is the community's servers.

Finding those servers is easier than it used to be. Server Discovery arrived in Update 5 (May 26, 2026). It's an in-game list of community-run servers, so you don't have to dig through third-party lists, Discord posts or word of mouth. The Update 6 patch notes (August 27, 2026) also list a Mod Browser.

What "early access" means if you buy now

The store is upfront about this. Hytale is still in active development, and you should expect bugs and changes on the way to full release. It also says the game is missing key accessibility features, controller support among them.

A couple of practical things:

My honest read: if a game changing under your feet would annoy you, wait. If you like getting in early and watching a game take shape, $19.99 for the Standard edition is a reasonable bet. And if you'd rather wait, my roundup of games like Minecraft has plenty you can buy today.

Do I have to pay for Hytale? The "free Hytale" searches

Yes, you do. Hytale's site and store have no free download, no demo and no trial. The only ways in are the three paid editions or a gift code someone bought for you.

That means any "free Hytale download" comes from somewhere that isn't Hytale. It's the same deal as cracked Minecraft launchers. You'd be running an installer from a random link and hoping it's only the game. Cracked Minecraft launchers have a documented habit of bundling stuff you never asked for. I've covered how that goes in what cracked Minecraft really gets you, and the same lessons apply here. Never hand your Hytale account details to a site promising free copies or codes.

Wait, wasn't Hytale cancelled?

It was, briefly. On June 23, 2025, Riot Games, which owned Hypixel Studios at the time, announced that Hytale's development was ending. Then on November 17, 2025, Hypixel co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme announced he'd bought Hytale back from Riot. Early access opened on January 13, 2026, and that's the game you can buy today.

If you wanted a free voxel game

If "free" was the whole point, Luanti is the obvious pick. It's free and open source, and it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, the BSDs and Android. Here's how Luanti stacks up against Minecraft. For more options, here's my list of the best free games like Minecraft. There's also one coming soon: Folly, an upcoming standalone multiplayer voxel game for PC. It enters early access on October 16, 2026, and it's free, no purchases required. Here's how its island-in-the-void setup works.
