Is the Sodium Mod Safe for Minecraft? Where to Download It and Whether Servers Allow It

The real download pages, which loaders it runs on, and where Sodium stands on Hypixel.

Is Sodium safe? If you mean the Sodium mod for Minecraft (not the stuff in your salt shaker), yes, as long as you get it from the right place. It's a Java Edition performance mod from the CaffeineMC team, and the safe downloads are its Modrinth and CurseForge pages. The usual trouble isn't malware from the mod itself. It's reuploads on other sites, and crashes from old graphics drivers.

Quick version: grab the stable build from Modrinth or CurseForge, use Fabric (NeoForge and Quilt work too), and skip anything that isn't one of those two pages or the project's GitHub. On servers, Hypixel allows performance mods that fit its "client performance" category, but it also says every mod is at your own risk. Details below, as of late October 2026.

What the Sodium mod actually is

Sodium is a rendering engine replacement for the Minecraft client. Its Modrinth page describes it as something that greatly improves frame rates and reduces micro-stutter, and the project is published by the CaffeineMC organization. It's client-side only, which means it changes how your game draws things and nothing about how the game itself plays. Its siblings, Lithium and Phosphor (Phosphor is for versions before 1.19), cover other parts of the game.

The source code is public on GitHub, under the Polyform Shield 1.0.0 licence, so you can read it yourself. Out of the box it turns on every optimisation your system supports, so you probably won't need to touch the settings. To check it's working, open Video Settings: you'll see Sodium's own settings screen.

Where to download Sodium (and what's a reupload)

The project's GitHub README says it straight: the latest stable release comes from the official Modrinth and CurseForge pages. That's the whole list of places to download it, plus the GitHub project itself, which is where the source lives.

Search for Sodium and you'll also find mirror sites and reupload pages. Those are unofficial copies, not CaffeineMC downloads, and there's no reason to use them when the real pages are a click away. Hypixel's own mod guidance says the same thing in general terms: get mods from the creator's own site, GitHub or profile, because unofficial downloads can carry bugs, unadvertised features (which can get you punished on their server) or even malicious code.

One name mix-up is worth knowing. Magnesium (formerly Sodium Reforged) is, by its own CurseForge description, an unofficial port that isn't affiliated with Jellysquid or CaffeineMC. So if a download claims to be Sodium for Forge, check who made it: Sodium's own pages list Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, not Forge.

Sodium loaders and versions: Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt

Sodium's Modrinth page lists Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, and it's Java Edition only. There's no Bedrock version. Since Sodium 0.6.0 both Fabric and NeoForge are supported, and the project recommends Fabric for new users because it's more lightweight and stable for now. Per the install wiki, NeoForge support starts at Minecraft 1.21. Forge isn't on Sodium's own lists; if you're sorting out loaders, is Minecraft Forge safe? covers where to get them.

The Modrinth page currently lists versions from 1.16.3 up through the 26.x releases. Versions move, so open the Versions tab and match it to your exact Minecraft version rather than trusting any list, including this one.

Is Sodium allowed on Hypixel? Will it get you banned?

Hypixel's Allowed Modifications support article sorts permitted mods into categories: Client Performance Improvement, Aesthetic, Cosmetic HUD, and Brightness & Gamma. It defines the first as "modifications that simply seek to improve the performance of the Minecraft client without making changes to the game itself, such as those which improve the FPS of the Minecraft client." If a mod doesn't fit a category, assume it's not allowed.

Sodium is a client-side rendering mod, so it fits that description. That's my read of the category, though. Hypixel's article doesn't name Sodium (its example for optimisation mods is OptiFine), so don't go quoting Hypixel as having approved it by name. The same article is just as clear about the other half: all use of mods on the server is at your own risk, even the ones they list as examples, and they can't review every version of every mod. Forum threads on the topic land in the same place: performance mods are generally fine, and nobody can promise you won't get banned.

I couldn't find anyone banned for Sodium on its own. If a ban happens, look at what else is in your mods folder, and at whether your Sodium jar came from somewhere unofficial. Mods that change how your client talks to the server are out no matter what category they claim.

Other servers set their own rules, so read the rules page of any server you play on before you load up a mods folder.

Sodium vs OptiFine

Both are performance mods, and Hypixel's article uses OptiFine as its example of an allowed one. They're different in what else you get. Sodium is the rendering engine and not much else. Pair it with Iris and you get shader pack support, and the install wiki lists a set of community mods that cover OptiFine extras like connected textures, custom entity models, better grass, dynamic lights and custom skies. OptiFine bundles that kind of thing in one jar. For the OptiFine side of the story, including its fake-site problem, read is OptiFine safe? And if shaders are the reason you're here, are Minecraft shaders safe? is next.

How to install Sodium safely

The Sodium wiki recommends a launcher that handles mods for you, either the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher (both third-party). The vanilla launcher works too, you just manage the files yourself. If you're still choosing, see my best Minecraft launchers roundup.

  1. Install Fabric Loader from fabricmc.net. Launcher users can let the app set up the instance.
  2. Modrinth App: open your new instance, choose Add Content, and pick Sodium. Prism: right-click the instance, choose Edit, then Mods, then Download Mods, search Sodium and install the latest.
  3. Vanilla launcher: download the file for your exact Minecraft version from Modrinth and drop it in your mods folder.
  4. Launch and check Video Settings. Sodium's settings screen means it's loaded.

Many other Fabric mods need Fabric API, so you'll probably add that later. If you're building a bigger setup, are Minecraft mods safe? has the general rules.

What can actually go wrong

Mostly, crashes. Sodium needs a desktop GPU with up-to-date drivers that support OpenGL 4.5 or newer, which the project says covers most cards from roughly the last twelve years. Most crashes and rendering glitches trace back to out-of-date graphics drivers, so update those first. Android and some Windows-on-ARM devices that run OpenGL through translation layers aren't supported and have severe performance problems. Sodium's Discord is the place for help, and bugs go to GitHub issues.

So, is Sodium safe?

Yes, from Modrinth or CurseForge. Use a stable build, match your Minecraft version, run Fabric, and keep your graphics drivers current. On Hypixel it fits the client performance category, with the usual "your own risk" warning attached. On any other server, read the rules first.
