Is NameMC Safe? What the Minecraft Name and Skin Lookup Site Shows, and the Scams Around It

A straight answer on namemc.com, what it makes public about your account, and the scams that borrow its name.

Is NameMC safe? To browse, yes. It's a long-running lookup site for Minecraft Java usernames, skins and servers, and you don't need to log in to use it. The catches are that it's a fan site with ads, and that what it shows about your account is public. The bigger danger isn't the site, it's people pretending to be it.

Short version of the rest: NameMC doesn't need your Microsoft password, anything that asks for it isn't NameMC, and you can hide your old usernames if you don't want them looked up.

What is NameMC?

NameMC (namemc.com) is where people go to search Minecraft usernames, check whether a name is free, and browse millions of skins, capes and servers. The top menu runs Skins, Names, Servers, Capes, Store and FAQ. It also has a ranked server list with player counts.

It is not run by Mojang or Microsoft. Its own FAQ says it isn't affiliated with either, and its terms say it's "not an official Minecraft product." So if you have a problem with your actual Minecraft account, NameMC can't fix it. Its FAQ sends you to Minecraft Support for that.

Its FAQ talks about Java Edition profiles, so think of it as a Java-oriented site.

Do you need an account?

Not to look around. The home page, skins, servers and FAQ all open without signing in. A NameMC account is only for things like hiding names or linking profiles, and its terms say you can only link Minecraft profiles you own or are allowed to manage. To make an account you need to be at least 13 (or your country's minimum age), and the terms say anyone under the age of majority needs a parent or guardian's permission to use the site at all. If you're a parent weighing this up, my piece on whether Minecraft is safe for kids covers the wider picture.

Skins don't need your password either. Per the FAQ, you wear the skin on your Java profile, wait about 60 seconds, then visit your profile page on NameMC and it's uploaded automatically. Nothing in that process asks you to hand over a login.

What NameMC shows about your account

Anything on a public profile can be looked up by anyone, so assume it's visible:

How complete its name history is, I wouldn't promise. What you can do something about is below.

How to hide old names

NameMC lets you hide one or more previous names. You log in to your NameMC account to do it, and a hidden name shows up as "—" in your history. There's a limit worth knowing: only previous names can be hidden. Your current name always shows.

That's a real gap if your worry is privacy. If your username is your real name, or close to it, hiding the old ones won't stop people finding the current one. For a kid's account especially, pick a name that doesn't give anything away from the start.

How NameMC makes money, and what it collects

NameMC is ad-supported. Its privacy policy mentions Google AdSense and other advertising cookies, plus analytics cookies, and an ad blocker is a reasonable thing to run there. It also sells a paid "Emerald" rank in its store, and its terms say subscriptions auto-renew. That's the only paid thing I know of there, so if you're asked to pay for something else on a page that looks like NameMC, stop and check the address.

According to the policy, it records usage data like your IP address, location, browser and the pages you view. If you sign up, it holds your email address. Profile data can include email, country and linked social accounts, and it's kept until you choose to delete it. Cookie data is kept no more than 365 days. The policy reads like a generic template, so don't read much more into it than those lists.

One more thing from the terms: name availability and drop times aren't guaranteed to be accurate. A countdown on NameMC isn't a promise that the name will be yours.

The scams that use the NameMC name

This is where people actually get hurt. NameMC itself puts a warning on every page: the only official Discord server for NameMC is discord.gg/NameMC, and "other similar-looking Discord servers are scams." It also says it will never reach out to you directly to resolve an issue with your Minecraft account.

Take that as the template for everything else:

The common thread is a request for your password, your verification code or your account. A lookup site has no reason to ask for any of them. I went deeper on the account side in my article on free Minecraft account generators, which is worth a read if you've been offered one.

Protect your Microsoft account

Since a stolen account is the real worst case, spend five minutes on the basics:

  1. Turn on two-step verification in your Microsoft account's security settings (account.microsoft.com). An authenticator app is a better choice than text messages. Menus change, so look for the security section there rather than following a screenshot from an old guide.
  2. Use a password you don't use anywhere else.
  3. Never share a verification code with anyone, ever. Nobody legitimate asks for one.
  4. If you clicked something dodgy, change your password straight away from Microsoft's own site.

Skin sites carry the same kind of risk. If you're comparing, I wrote about whether The Skindex is safe and whether Planet Minecraft is safe.

So, is NameMC legit?

Honest verdict

Yes. NameMC is a real, long-running lookup site, it's upfront that it isn't Mojang, and you can use it without an account or your password. Treat anything on a public profile as public, hide old names if they bother you, and treat every DM, link or "free cape" that mentions NameMC as a scam until proven otherwise.
