Is Minehut safe? Mostly yes. It's a real hosting service, not a virus: you make a server in your browser and your friends join it at an address ending in .minehut.gg. It's run by a company, GamerSafer Inc., and it's free because it runs ads and sells optional upgrades. The part that deserves your caution isn't the host. It's the public lobby and the random player servers around it, where fake-login phishing has been a documented problem. As of October 2026, that's the picture.
The practical version: you must be 13 or older, sign in only on minehut.com or minehut.app, don't hand out personal info, and treat other people's servers like any public Minecraft server. Details and a parents' section below. If you're comparing hosts, my page on whether Aternos is safe covers the other big free one.
Who runs Minehut?
Minehut is a subsidiary of GamerSafer Inc. The terms of service are an agreement between you and GamerSafer Inc., governed by California law, and the Minehut Rules page calls GamerSafer "the owners of Minehut." GamerSafer describes itself as a player identity and trust-and-safety company. The privacy policy you agree to is GamerSafer's too, and it names minehut.com as a covered service.
So it's a company with a named owner, written terms, a rules page and a support center. That's what a legit host looks like. What it isn't is a charity, which brings us to money.
Is Minehut free?
Yes. The homepage says it's free to use, no credit card required, and there are no playtime limits on any plan. A cookie banner on the site says the ads "keep free servers free", so ads plus paid upgrades pay the bills.
Here's what the plans looked like on the plans page in October 2026. Paid plans are priced in credits, which you buy in the Minehut store.
| Plan | Cost | Players | RAM | Sleeps when empty? | Sub users |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free | 10 | 1GB | Yes | 0 |
| Standard | 600 credits/month | Unlimited | 2GB | Yes | 1 |
| Pro | 1,800 credits/month | Unlimited | 6GB | Yes | 3 |
| Ultimate | 6,000 credits/month | Unlimited | 14GB | No, online 24/7 | 6 |
Java and Bedrock players can both join any server, which is handy if your friends are split across devices. Every server gets DDoS protection too.
The catches of free Minehut
- Ten players, 1GB of RAM. Fine for friends, tight for a community.
- It sleeps when empty. It wakes up when a player joins.
- Five free servers per account, one online at a time. Minehut's help center says extra free servers beyond five are scheduled for deletion, with one email and 30 days to download files, upgrade or delete another. Servers that haven't been started in the longest time go first, and another player starting yours in-game counts as starting it. As of October 2026 Minehut only says that's coming "soon", so if you've got a pile of old servers, sort them out now.
- Storage. Free servers get a 10GB container, paid ones 20GB. Go over and Minehut warns of data loss or file corruption. Download your world now and then.
- The time limit is gone. Free servers used to have a 4-hour daily limit, which is why old Reddit threads are furious. The current help page says it's gone entirely. Plenty of blog posts still describe it, so trust Minehut's own pages.
What you agree to
- Age. You have to be at least 13 to register, join the Discord or play on the network. If you're 13 to 18, a parent or guardian has to agree to the terms. The rules say anyone found to be under 13 is banned permanently.
- Your content. Anything you create or upload gives GamerSafer and its subsidiaries a non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide, sublicensable license to use it, with no payment. Minehut can also change or remove server names whenever it wants.
- No guarantees. The service is "as is", with no promise it'll be available or virus-free.
- Disputes. The terms have binding arbitration and a class-action waiver. You can opt out within 60 days by emailing support@gamersafer.com.
- Data. GamerSafer's privacy policy says it collects things like your email, name, birth date, country, username and a hashed password, plus device and IP details. It says it doesn't sell your info, but it does share personal info with third parties for advertising and marketing. Parents can ask for a child's data to be deleted through support@gamersafer.com. Minehut also has a help article on deleting your account.
None of that is unusual for a free, ad-supported service. It's just worth knowing before a kid clicks through it.
The lobby and public servers: the real risk
This is where I'd spend your worry. Minehut says your server is visible to over 250,000 monthly lobby users, and that's a lot of strangers.
Phishing in the lobby
Minehut's own help center describes phishing attempts in the lobby that tried to send players to fake sites that can steal login details or push harmful downloads. Its help page is clear on what's real:
- The official domains are minehut.com and minehut.app.
- Minehut will never ask you to sign in, download something to get credits, complete captchas or verify your account.
- If you did enter your login on a fake site, change every password that matches and report any charges.
And no, the minehut.gg thing isn't a scam site. Server addresses like smp.minehut.gg are addresses on Minehut's network, not websites to log into.
Who's watching?
Minehut moderates its own lobby and Discord. Player servers are a different story. The rules say Minehut doesn't actively monitor them, leaves it to server owners where possible, and accepts reports. Owners can allow hacking or griefing on their own server and add their own rules, and they handle appeals for punishments there. Some servers listed in the network are also hosted outside Minehut, and staff say they can't moderate those widely.
The rules do ban a lot: sexual content, grooming and predatory behavior, sharing personal info (names, emails, IPs, addresses, photos, ages), phishing links, impersonating staff and gambling. Child endangerment is zero tolerance. Reports go through the support form at support.minehut.com. Appeals are open for 60 days.
The same rules ban external links in chat, with exceptions on your own server for things like your Discord or shop. So a stranger dropping a link in the lobby is breaking the rules, and you should treat it as a red flag.
Plugins and your own server
You can upload plugins through the web dashboard, and higher plans allow more of them. Like on any host, the plugin is on you. Stick to well-known authors, the same way you would with mods anywhere. My piece on whether CurseForge is safe is a good starting point for sources. Minehut's rules also ban selling accounts, servers and names, and using compromised accounts or bots.
Is Minehut safe for kids?
The age floor is 13, and the terms want a parent's agreement for 13 to 18. Minehut doesn't describe a chat filter or parental controls, so the safety plan is mostly yours. What I'd do:
- Make the account together, with an email you control and a password that's used nowhere else.
- Tell them: never log in on a site someone links in chat. Real Minehut is minehut.com or minehut.app and never asks for a login to hand out credits.
- No real name, school, address, photos or age in chat. Minehut's own rules ban asking for these.
- If your kid owns a server, turn on the Minecraft whitelist so only invited players join, and be picky about who gets sub-user access.
- Show them how to report: the Minehut support form. If a server owner's the problem, leave.
- Sit in on the first few sessions of any public server. They vary a lot.

Minehut vs other free hosts
Minehut's selling points are a free tier with no daily time limit, Java and Bedrock on the same server, and a lobby that can bring in players. The downsides are small free servers and a lobby you have to keep your guard up in. If you want to compare, I've written up free Minecraft server hosting and a list of Aternos alternatives.
