Is Minecraft on Game Pass? Which Tiers Include It (2026)

Which tiers actually get you the game, what Essential does and doesn't cover, and whether subscribing beats just buying it.

Is Minecraft on Game Pass? Yes, but not on every tier. As of October 2026, Xbox's own Minecraft for Windows store page lists the game as included with Game Pass Premium, PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate. Game Pass Essential (the tier that used to be called Core) isn't on that list, so Essential on its own won't get you Minecraft.

On those three tiers you get Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. That's the same bundle that costs $29.99 as a one-time buy on minecraft.net: both editions plus the Minecraft Launcher. The Deluxe and Ultimate Collections aren't part of Game Pass. And you don't need Game Pass to play Minecraft at all. It's just a second way in.

Which Game Pass tiers include Minecraft

I checked this against xbox.com and support.xbox.com in October 2026. Xbox has renamed Game Pass tiers before, and its own support FAQ confirms that Game Pass Core is now Game Pass Essential. If the names look different when you read this, that's why.

Game Pass tierMinecraft included? (Java & Bedrock for PC)Online multiplayer on Xbox console?
Essential (formerly Core)NoYes
PremiumYesYes
PC Game PassYesNot one of the tiers Xbox lists for it
UltimateYesYes

You'll find retail Q&A answers and forum posts saying flat out that Essential includes Minecraft. Ignore them and go with Xbox's store page. A Microsoft Q&A answer from April 2026 says the same thing: Essential doesn't include the game, and Premium, PC and Ultimate do. The store page itself can be confusing if you scroll around it, so the table above is the short version.

Can I play Minecraft with Game Pass Essential?

Not unless you already own the game. Essential doesn't include Minecraft. What it does cover is online play on a console. Xbox's Minecraft purchase page says online multiplayer on console needs Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, and that's true whether you bought Minecraft outright or play it through Game Pass.

So think of Essential as the "let me play online on my Xbox" tier, not the "give me Minecraft" tier. If you're a parent wondering whether your kid needs Essential to play Minecraft: only for online play on an Xbox console. Xbox support's own answer is that you don't need a subscription to play Minecraft at all.

How to play Minecraft with Game Pass on PC

The Game Pass version is the Java & Bedrock Edition for PC bundle, so you get both editions and the Minecraft Launcher with one subscription. Java and Bedrock aren't split across different tiers. If your tier has one, it has both.

The easiest check is Xbox's Minecraft for Windows store page. It has a section called "Included in these subscriptions". If your tier is on that list, the game is included. If it isn't, you're looking at a purchase.

What happens to your worlds if Game Pass runs out

This is the "will I lose my Minecraft world if I don't renew?" question, and the answer follows from how Game Pass licensing works. The game checks for a valid license when it launches. Without an active subscription or a copy you own, it simply won't start. Your worlds don't get wiped, though. Players consistently report that their saves stay on disk and come back once they resubscribe or buy the game.

In practice, letting Game Pass lapse locks the door without emptying the house. If you've put serious hours into a world and you're about to cancel, buying the game is the clean way to keep playing it.

Do you need a separate subscription for Realms?

Yes. Realms, Minecraft's official hosted worlds, has its own recurring subscription, and Game Pass doesn't cover it. A Microsoft support answer from March 2026 puts it bluntly: if you play Minecraft through Game Pass, Realms is still a separate subscription.

Xbox support lists three optional Minecraft subscriptions, all separate from Game Pass: Realms, Realms Plus and Minecraft Marketplace Pass. You don't need any of them to play. To use Realms you'll need to sign in with a Microsoft account.

Do you need Game Pass to play Minecraft?

No. Minecraft is a one-time purchase, and Xbox support says so plainly: you don't need a subscription to play Minecraft. Game Pass is an alternative way in, not a requirement. The one subscription that does matter is for online play on an Xbox console, which needs Essential or above. For the full pricing picture on every platform, see is Minecraft free?

Is Minecraft free with Game Pass?

No. It's included while you're subscribed, which isn't the same as free. You're paying monthly for access, and when you stop paying, the game stops launching. That's fine if you play a lot of the Game Pass library. Just don't count it as a free copy.

Game Pass vs. buying Minecraft: the cost math

Here are the one-time PC prices from minecraft.net as of October 2026:

Edition (PC)One-time priceOn Game Pass?
Java & Bedrock Standard$29.99Yes (Premium, PC, Ultimate)
Deluxe Collection$39.99No
Ultimate Collection$49.99No

Game Pass prices change. Xbox cut the price of Ultimate and PC Game Pass in April 2026, for example. Check the current price on Xbox's Game Pass page and do the math for your own situation: a monthly charge against $29.99 paid once.

My take: if Minecraft is the only reason you'd subscribe, buy Standard. You pay once, it never stops launching, and you're not betting your worlds on a renewal date. Game Pass makes sense if you'd actually play other games in the library too, or if you just want to try Minecraft for a month or two with friends before committing.

If you want something genuinely free

If what you really want is block-building without paying, either once or monthly, I've collected the legit routes in how to play Minecraft for free. There's also a new option coming soon: Folly, a standalone multiplayer voxel game for PC. It enters early access on October 16, 2026, and it's free, no purchases required. Here's how its island-in-the-void setup works.
