Best-Of Lists

The Best Building Games in 2026: Sandbox, Base and City Builders (Free Ones Included)

Sandbox, survival base-building or running a whole colony? The right pick depends on which kind of building you mean.

Search for the best building games and you get two completely different answers. Reddit threads argue about RimWorld and Oxygen Not Included, and the listicles are full of city builders. Both camps are right, because "building game" means at least four different things. So this list is split by the kind of building you actually mean. Every pick gets its platforms, the price as of 2026 and who it suits. The free ones are flagged, and there's a quick free building games summary near the end.

Which kind of building do you mean?

Get this right and the rest of the list sorts itself out:

Sandbox building games: build your own world

The obvious one first. You already know Minecraft, and it isn't free. If what you really want is more Minecraft-shaped games, I've sorted the best games like Minecraft by survival, building and exploration, so I won't re-list them here.

Luanti (free)

Luanti, called Minetest until it was renamed on October 13, 2024, is free and open source under the LGPL 2.1. There's nothing to buy, ever. It's technically a voxel game engine rather than one game. It hasn't shipped a default game since version 5.8.0, so you pick a community game like VoxeLibre or Mineclonia and build from there. You can play it on Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD and Android. It suits tinkerers who don't mind a bit of setup. If you want to build in blocks and not pay a cent, this is the one.

Townscaper

Townscaper is a toy more than a game. There's no goal and no combat, just building. It's been feature-complete since 1.0. It's $5.99 on Steam (Windows, Mac, Linux), on Xbox with Play Anywhere and on Switch, and $4.99 on iOS and Android. A free browser version lets you try it first. Suits anyone who wants twenty calm minutes of building with nothing to lose.

Best base building games: survival

These are the games the base-building threads keep naming. A heads-up before you buy: a couple of these went up in price around their 1.0 launch, and the threads weren't thrilled about it.

Valheim

Valheim left early access and hit 1.0 on September 9, 2026. The price went up 50% to $29.99 at launch. You can play it on PC (Steam, plus Xbox Play Anywhere), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and Switch 2, with crossplay across all of them. That crossplay is the selling point: if your friend group is split across machines, this is the easiest survival base-builder to get everyone into.

Enshrouded

Enshrouded is still in early access for a few more days. Its 1.0 lands on October 15, 2026, on PC (Steam) and PS5, with PS5 Pro support. The Xbox Series X|S version slipped to spring 2027. The Steam price rose to €39.99 in September, up from €29.99, so the cheap early-access window has closed. Suits PC and PS5 players who want a big survival build. If you're on Xbox, you're waiting.

The Planet Crafter

The Planet Crafter reached 1.0 in April 2024 on Windows (Steam and GOG), got a 2.0 update in April 2026, and came to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in July 2026. Regular price is $23.99. Co-op goes up to 10 players. That's a lot of hands for a shared base, so it's a good fit for a bigger group.

Core Keeper

Core Keeper hit 1.0 on PC (Windows and Linux) in August 2024. PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Switch followed that September, and it's run on Switch 2 through backward compatibility since January 2026. It's $19.99, and the publisher kept that price at 1.0, which is rarer than it should be. Co-op is 1 to 8 players. Crossplay only works between PC platforms or within a console family, so check what your friends play on. Best value in this section.

Vintage Story

Vintage Story isn't on Steam. You buy it from the developer's own site, Humble Store or itch.io. The studio still calls it early access, not because it's unstable but because its full vision isn't built yet. It's paid. Check vintagestory.at for the current price before you buy. It suits survival builders who don't mind buying outside Steam.

City and colony builders: the best building strategy games

Here you aren't laying every block yourself. You're designing a place and keeping it alive.

RimWorld

RimWorld is the name that keeps coming up in base-building threads. It's $34.99 on Steam, and you can also get it on GOG and the Epic Games Launcher. The catch is the DLC. There are a lot of paid expansions, and the full bundle adds up fast. My advice: buy the base game, play it for a month, then decide.

Oxygen Not Included

Klei's space-colony sim, PC only on Steam. The base price is $24.99, and it does go on sale: it was $7.49 at 70% off in June 2026. Paid DLC packs like Spaced Out! and the Frosty Planet Pack add more on top. Suits people who like their colony building with a lot of moving parts.

Frostpunk 2

A city-survival game: you build a city that has to survive. It's $44.99 on Steam, and you can also get it on GOG, the Epic Games Launcher and the Microsoft Store. It's out on console too. A 2026 roadmap of patches and two DLC packs is underway. At $44.99 it isn't cheap, so a sale is a good time to jump in.

Timberborn

Timberborn left early access with its 1.0 on March 12, 2026. It's $34.99 on PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG, and it runs on Mac too (Apple Silicon and Intel). Early-access owners got 1.0 free, which is how it should be done. Suits city-builder fans on PC or Mac.

Cities: Skylines II

The pure city builder of the bunch, on PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store. It's paid and goes on sale, so check the store for today's price before you buy. Suits anyone who wants a city that just keeps getting bigger.

Engineering builders

Satisfactory

Satisfactory is out of early access and on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. It's paid, and the price moves around with sales, so check the Steam page. Suits the person who wants their builds to do something and enjoys fixing them when they don't.

Free building games

If you don't want to spend anything, here's the short version:

For more that run in a tab, see my list of the best free browser block games. For downloadable ones, try the best free games like Minecraft.

Building games for kids

Townscaper is the gentlest pick here, with no combat and no way to fail. For anything online, chat rules and in-game shops matter more than the feature list. My guide to safe games like Roblox for kids covers who can talk to your child and what each game sells.

Dollar figures are list prices before sales. Prices bounce around, so check the storefront. On Xbox or PS5, your safest bets are Valheim, The Planet Crafter and Core Keeper, plus Enshrouded on PS5. On a phone, it's Townscaper, or Luanti on Android.

So which building game is the best?

There's no single winner. It depends which kind of building you mean. To build with friends on different machines, get Valheim. On a budget, Core Keeper at $19.99 is the best value, and Luanti costs nothing. To run a colony, start with RimWorld's base game and hold off on the DLC. For pure, calm building, Townscaper is cheap and has a free version to try first.

One to watch: Folly

Folly is an upcoming standalone voxel game for PC, free with no purchases required, entering early access on October 16, 2026. Every player gets a permanent personal universe that starts as one small island in the void. It isn't out yet, so it's one to watch rather than a pick for today. Here's how the island-and-hub idea works.
